たり南方異物志（ナンホウイブツシ）ニ云｜嶺南渓洞（レイナンケイトウ）の中に
飛頭蛮（ヒトウバン）《割書：国ノ名此国ノ人ハ｜皆ロクロクビナリ》あり項（ウナジ）に赤き痕（アト）
あつて夜は両の耳を翼（ツバサ）とし飛去（トビサツ）て虫（ムシ）を
喰暁（クヒアカツキ）に及（ヲヨン）で復還（マタカヘツ）て本のことしとあり昔（ムカシ）
唐土（モロコシ）の呉将軍（ゴシヤウグン）が召仕し下女の首夜（クビヨ）
毎（ゴト）に飛出たりと捜神記（ソウジンキ）に載（ノセ）たり是
今の轆轤首（ロクロクヒ）の事なり然れは轆轤首
の抜（ヌケ）出るは食（シヨク）を求（モトメ）水を飲（ノマ）んがためなり
全（マツタ）く人を恨（ウラミ）て他（タ）の閨（ネヤ）に通（カヨ）ふにあらず此｜生（ムマレ）
質（ツキ）の人は夜寝（ヨルネ）入ても飲食（インシヨク）を求（モトム）ると見へたり
皆水辺（ミナスイヘン）に趣（ヲモム）く也其外｜大平広記酉陽雑俎（タイヘイクワウキユウヤウサツソ）
夷堅志博物志等（イケンシハクブツシトウ）に此事を載（ノセ）たり事繁（コトシゲ）
けれは爰に略（リヤク）す頭（カシラ）の飛出｜鼻（ハナ）より水を
飲（ノミ）たるを見たる人あり元（ゲン）の世の詩（シ）人｜陳孚（チンフ）
と云し人｜安南（アンナン）といふ国へ使（ツカイ）に往（ユキ）し事あり
其道すがら紀行（キカウ）の詩（シ）を作れり鼻飲如（ハナノノムコトコトシ）＿二
現代語訳
『南方異物志』に言うには、嶺南の渓洞の中に飛頭蛮（割書：国の名。この国の人々は皆ろくろ首である）という者がいて、うなじに赤い痕があって、夜は両耳を翼として飛び去り、虫を食い、夜明けになるとまた戻って元通りになる、とある。昔、中国の呉将軍が召し使っていた下女の首が、夜ごとに飛び出したと『捜神記』に載っている。これが今で言うろくろ首のことである。それゆえ、ろくろ首が（首を）抜け出すのは、食べ物を求め、水を飲むためである。
まったく人を恨んで他人の寝室に通うのではない。このような生まれつきの人は、夜寝入っても飲食を求めると見られる。（飛び出した首は）みな水辺に向かうのである。その他、『太平広記』・『酉陽雑俎』・『夷堅志』・『博物志』等にこのことが載っている。事が繁多であるので、ここでは略す。（ろくろ首の）頭が飛び出して、鼻から水を飲んだのを見た人がいる。元の時代の詩人、陳孚という人が安南という国へ使いに行ったことがある。その道中に紀行の詩を作った。「鼻飲如（鼻で飲むことは……）」
英語訳
According to the Nanfang Yiwu Zhi (Record of Strange Things from the South), within the ravines of Lingnan there exist beings called Feitouban (marginal note: the name of a country; all people of this country are rokurokubi). They have red marks on the backs of their necks, and at night they use their two ears as wings, fly away, eat insects, and at dawn return to their original state. Long ago, it is recorded in the Soushenji (In Search of the Supernatural) that the head of a maidservant employed by General Wu of China would fly out every night. This is what we now call the rokurokubi. Therefore, the reason the rokurokubi's neck extends out is in order to seek food and drink water.
It is not at all that they bear grudges against people and visit others' bedchambers. It appears that people born with this nature seek food and drink even while sleeping at night. The heads always make their way toward bodies of water. Beyond this, such matters are recorded in the Taiping Guangji, Youyang Zazu, Yijian Zhi, Bowu Zhi, and other works. As the subject matter is extensive, I will abbreviate here. There are those who have witnessed the head fly out and drink water through the nose. Chen Fu, a poet of the Yuan dynasty, once traveled as an envoy to the country of Annan (Vietnam). Along the way he composed a travel poem, with the line: "Drinking through the nose, like..."
