文宣王（ブンセンワウ）も道の衰（ヲトロヘ）るに及（ヲヨ）んでは夢にだも
周公（シウコウ）を見ずと宣（ノタマ）へり皆是等（ミナコレラ）の類（タクヒ）思ふ事
見る事聞事に触（フレ）て夢を見る其｜証拠（シヤウコ）
には終（ツイ）に見ざる国（クニ）しらざる所を夢に見る
事なし我朝（ワガテウ）にては中華天竺（モロコシテンヂク）の山水を二
人も夢見たる事なきを以知るへし
古語（コゴ）に南人不（ナンジンハス）＿レ夢（ユメミ）＿レ駝北人不（ダヲホクジンハス）＿レ夢（ユメミ）＿レ象（ザウヲ）といふ
事あり南方の国には駝（ダ）といふ獣（ケタモノ）なし
北方の国には又｜象（ソウ）といふ獣（ケタモノ）なしさるに依（ヨツ）て
南人は終（ツイ）に見ざる物故へに駝（ダ）を夢に見ず
北人は又終に象を見ざるによつて夢にも
見す是等（コレラ）の事にて見ず聞（キカ）ざる事は
夢見ぬ物といふ事を知へし又｜臓（ザウ）より
夢見るといふは縦令（タトヘ）は腎（ジン）の実（ジツ）したる人は
水を夢見｜虚（キヨ）したる人は火を夢見る類也

現代語訳
文宣王（孔子）も、道が衰えるようになってからは、夢の中でさえも周公を見なくなったとおっしゃっている。これらはみな、思うこと・見ること・聞くことに触れて夢を見るという例である。その証拠として、一度も見たことのない国や、知らない場所を夢に見ることはない。我が国（日本）では、中国や天竺（インド）の山や川を夢に見た者が一人もいないことから、それが分かるはずである。
古語に「南人は駱駝を夢に見ず、北人は象を夢に見ず」という言葉がある。南方の国には駱駝という獣がいない。北方の国には象という獣がいない。それゆえ、南の人は終生見たことがないので駱駝を夢に見ず、北の人も終生象を見たことがないので夢にも見ない。これらのことから、見たことも聞いたこともないことは夢に見ないものだということが分かるはずである。
また、臓腑から夢を見るというのは、例えば腎が充実している人は水を夢に見て、虚している人は火を夢に見るという類のことである。
【割注：腎は北方の水に象（かたど）る。火はまた水と互いに剋（こく）する関係にあるため、虚すれば必ず火を夢に見るのである。】

Wenxuan Wang (Confucius) himself said that once the Way had fallen into decline, he could not even see the Duke of Zhou in his dreams. All of these are examples of how one dreams of things one has thought about, seen, or heard. As proof of this, one never dreams of a country one has never seen or a place one does not know. In our country (Japan), we can understand this from the fact that not a single person has ever dreamed of the mountains and rivers of China or India (Tenjiku).
There is an old saying: "Southerners do not dream of camels; Northerners do not dream of elephants." In southern lands, there is no beast called a camel. In northern lands, there is no beast called an elephant. For this reason, southerners, having never seen a camel in their lives, do not dream of camels; and northerners, having never seen an elephant, do not dream of elephants either. From these examples, one should understand that one does not dream of things one has neither seen nor heard.
As for dreaming through the organs: for example, a person whose kidneys are in a state of excess (jitsu) will dream of water, while a person whose kidneys are deficient (kyo) will dream of fire — this is the kind of thing meant here.
[Interlinear note: The kidneys correspond to the water of the North. Since fire and water mutually overcome (克) each other, when the kidneys are deficient, one will necessarily dream of fire.]
