現代語訳
答えて言う。その墓所の土地が陰湿な場所であれば、その人の脂分と混じり合って燃える道理である。乾いた土地であれば燃えることはない。それゆえ、普段から燃える古塚であっても、湿気のない乾いた土地へ場所を移せば燃えることはない。これはまったく死人の精霊がなす業ではない。道理を究めていない人は、そのような塚を見て「焦熱地獄の苦しみを現している」などと言うが、かつてそのような意味では断じてない。
また問う。海上に「竜灯」と呼ばれる火がある。陸に上がることなく、時折海上に見えることがあるが、これはいかなるものか。
答えて言う。竜灯が水上を行くことは、私の村などでは日常茶飯事で、見たことのない者もないほど多く見られる。これは水中の陰火である。あるいは、長年を経て陰火を帯びた魚などが泳いでいるものであろう。（割注：狐の尾に陰火が燃えるのと同じ道理）しかしながら、あの竜灯が高く上がり、山などに……

In answer: If the ground of the burial site is damp and yin in nature, the fire burns because it combines with the fatty substances of the deceased. If the ground is dry, it will not burn. Therefore, even an ancient burial mound that normally burns will cease to burn if it is relocated to dry ground without moisture. This is in no way the work of the spirits of the dead. Those who have not fully reasoned through natural principles look at such mounds and say things like "it manifests the torments of the burning hell," but this has never been the meaning of the phenomenon.
Another question: There is a fire on the sea called "ryūtō" (dragon lantern). It never comes ashore, but is sometimes seen above the sea — what manner of thing is this?
