或問云世に姑鬼（ウブメ）といふものありて雨（アメ）ふり

いふ是仏説（コレブツセツ）に所謂幽霊（イワユルユウレイ）の類（タクヒ）乎（カ）
対曰｜姑獲（ウフメ）といふは鳥（トリ）の事なり陳氏（チンシ）
本草（ホンサウ）に収（オサム）＿二人之魂魄（ヒトノコンハクヲ）＿一といふ是也 産婦（サンフ）の
死骸（シガイ）より形化（カタチケ）せる鳥なり天中記（テンチウキ）に
姑獲鳥（コクワクテウ）は鬼神（キシン）の類（タクヒ）也 毛（ケ）を忌（キ）ては鳥（トリ）と成（ナリ）
毛（ケ）を脱（ヌイ）では女人と成ル是 産婦（サンフ）の化（ケ）して
成れる物也故に胸（ムネ）に両（リヤウ）の乳（チ）あり人の子（コ）を
奪取（ウバヒト）つて己（ヲノレ）が子とする事を好（コノム）とあり凡
小児（セウニ）の衣類（イルイ）を夜家（ヨルイエ）の外（ソト）に干（ホシ）て置（ヲク）へ
からす此鳥（コノトリ）小児（セウニ）の衣類（イルイ）に血（チ）をぬれば忽其（タチマチソノ）
児驚風（コキヤウフウ）となり或は疳（カン）を病（ヤム）物也是を無（ブ）
辜疳（コカン）といふ也 姑獲鳥（コクワクテウ）を鬼鳥（キテウ）ともいふ

**産死婦の説（お産で亡くなった女性についての考察）**
問う：世に「姑鬼（うぶめ）」というものがあり、雨が降る暗い夜には出てきて、啾々（しゅうしゅう）と鳴いて、甚だしく人を悩ませると言う。これは仏説にいわゆる幽霊の類いであろうか。
答える：「姑獲（うぶめ）」というのは鳥のことである。陳氏の『本草』に「人の魂魄を収める」とあるのがそれである。産婦の死骸から形が化けてできた鳥である。『天中記』には次のように記されている。
「姑獲鳥（こかくちょう）は鬼神の類いである。羽毛をまとっては鳥となり、羽毛を脱いでは女人となる。これは産婦が変化してできた物であるゆえに、胸に二つの乳房がある。人の子を奪い取って自分の子とすることを好む」とある。
およそ幼い子供の衣類を、夜に家の外に干しておいてはならない。この鳥が幼子の衣類に血を塗ると、たちまちその子は驚風（ひきつけ）となり、あるいは疳（かん）の病を患うものである。これを「無辜疳（むこかん）」という。姑獲鳥を「鬼鳥（きちょう）」ともいう。

**On the Matter of Women Who Die in Childbirth**
Question: It is said that in this world there exists a creature called "ubume" (姑鬼), which appears on rainy, dark nights, crying out with a mournful "shū shū" sound, and greatly troubles people. Is this the sort of apparition that Buddhist teachings call a "yūrei" (wandering spirit)?
Answer: What is called "ubume" (姑獲) refers to a bird. It is the very creature described in Chen's *Bencao* (Materia Medica) as one that "collects the souls and spirits of humans." It is a bird that transforms from the corpse of a woman who died in childbirth. The *Tenchūki* (Records of Heaven and Earth) states:
"The kokakulchō (姑獲鳥, ubume bird) belongs to the category of demon-spirits. When it dons its feathers, it becomes a bird; when it removes its feathers, it becomes a woman. Because it is a transformation of a woman who died in childbirth, it has two breasts upon its chest. It delights in stealing the children of others and making them its own."
One should never leave a young child's clothing hanging outside the house at night. If this bird smears blood on a young child's garments, the child will immediately suffer from "kyōfū" (convulsions/fright fits), or will become afflicted with the ailment known as "kan" (nervous disorders in children). This condition is called "mukogan" (無辜疳, affliction without cause). The kokakulchō is also known as the "kichō" (鬼鳥, demon bird).
