Respectfully submitted through the post station system Item: The tonya (transport agents) and toshiyori (elders) of Satte post station on the Nikko Highway respectfully report: At Gongendō River (which is part of the Tone River), located eight chō to the east of our post station, houses and storehouses have been damaged from last night until today, the 9th day, at noon. Vertical pillars of five to six sun square, beam timbers of four to five shaku circumference, sills, lintels, door boards, crossbeams, rafters, bamboo roofing, miscanthus, wheat straw from that time, and various other household items have been broken into small pieces. Living trees of four to five shaku diameter, pine and cedar trees have been broken at heights of five to six shaku to about one jō, crushed and with bark stripped off, both roots and tops becoming like bamboo whisks. The river, which is sixty to seventy ken wide, is completely filled, making boat passage impossible due to the enormous amount of debris flowing down. For the past ten days or so, there has been no rain at all and the river was dry, but suddenly black muddy water rose four to five shaku. We cannot tell at all how much is flowing in the middle of the river, so we took a boat to investigate, and found a damaged saddle with "Jōshū Gunma-gun Kawashima Village" written on it, which had caught on the bank of Gongendō River. When we inquired, [we learned] from Fujiki-ho (village headman of Fujiki village)
