Itahana Post Station, Joshu Mizudono on the Nakasendo Highway
The petition submitted by the above post station states that Mount Asama erupted on the 28th day of the 5th month, the 28th day of the 6th month, and the 5th day of this month, with ash falling to a thickness of about 5 bu (approximately 1.5cm). Then from the evening of the 6th day of this month at the hour of the Monkey until the hour of the Sheep on the 8th day, there were continuous earthquakes and thunder day and night, with stones and sand falling incessantly. From the hour of the Horse to the hour of the Monkey on the 7th day, for about two and a half hours, it became dark as night, and people could barely conduct their affairs using lanterns and hand-held lights. The stones and sand accumulated to a thickness of approximately 1 shaku 1 sun (about 33cm), and in places where they were blown together by wind, the depth reached 1 shaku 4 to 5 sun (42-45cm). Regarding buildings, a two-bay house of someone serving in horse duties, as well as numerous back houses and small buildings were crushed. Needless to say, crops in the fields were destroyed, and all green grass disappeared entirely. They are immediately facing shortages of horse fodder and are in extreme distress, according to their petition.
