「いや、もういまいましいことです。寝るとまず借金取りが怒って、その上に目が見えないとぬかして、座頭かご者を抱いて寝たようです。もうぶつぶつ言うのもきりがない。」
瀬川は昨夜の様子から問いかける。
「水さん、昨夜はとんだ困ったことがあったでしょう。まあとんだ美しい話で、もう大きく明けようの潮時はどうなの。あなたを早く帰していただきたい。」
「よく言うやつだ。」

鳥山は瀬川に入れ込んで、呼ぶほどにますます舞い上がったため、今は話し方も悪くなった。とかく金の工面と思うけれども、なかなか今時床で花代三両をくれる客は少なく、ようやくあれこれと工夫して金二十両ばかりも工面した。しかしこれで瀬川を呼べば、また後の支払いに難儀することと思い、ふとこの二十両を抱え女郎の内で素寒貧な奴に三十日限りの約束で、何か目の覚めるような利息をつけて貸した。
「もし鳥山さん、私にも三両お貸しなさい。二十八、九日には心当たりがあります。」
「また中の町へも行ってくるよ。」
「菅原さんもどうぞ五両ばかりそう申してくれろと言いました。」

Toriyama became so infatuated with Segawa that the more he called on her, the more excited he became, so now even his way of speaking has deteriorated. He thinks constantly about arranging money, but nowadays there are few customers who will pay three ryō for a night's pleasure. Finally, through various schemes, he managed to arrange about twenty ryō. However, thinking that if he used this money to call on Segawa, he would again be in difficulty with later payments, he suddenly lent these twenty ryō to one of the impoverished courtesans in the brothel, with a thirty-day limit agreement and some eye-opening interest rate.
"Toriyama-san, please lend me three ryō as well. I have prospects in twenty-eight or twenty-nine days."
"I'll also go to Naka-no-chō again."
"Sugawara-san also said, 'Please ask for about five ryō for me.'"
