琉球眇乎南洋一島国耳、雖幷其大小数十嶼為一
域、要不足以為独立国、而従来為我皇国之附庸矣、
朱明以還、脩聘於漢土、受其冊封、称中山王、蓋其聘

知其為誰藩屛也、是以名分称呼之際、往々有疑其

自序
琉球は遥か南洋にある一つの島国にすぎない。大小数十の島々を合わせて一つの領域としているとはいえ、要するに独立国となるには足りず、従来より我が皇国の属国であった。明朝以降は、中国本土に使節を派遣し、その冊封を受けて中山王を称した。思うに、琉球が中国に使節を派遣する際は中国の年号を奉じ、我が国に朝貢する際は我が国の年号を用いるという、一つの国が二つの国に属するという状況で、いったいどちらの藩屏（属国）なのかが明らかでない。このため、名分や称呼について、その当否を疑う者がしばしばいる。私は十の証拠を挙げてこれを論じたい。そもそも琉球という国について論ずるに、地勢を論ずれば、これは我が九州の山脈が起伏し連なって、南海中に延びて行ったものである。地図を一覧すれば、このことは明らかに分かる。これが第一の証拠である。開発について論ずれば

Preface
Ryukyu is merely a small island nation in the distant South Seas. Although it combines several dozen large and small islands into one domain, it is fundamentally insufficient to constitute an independent state and has traditionally been a tributary of our Imperial nation. Since the Ming Dynasty, it has sent envoys to the Chinese mainland, received investiture from China, and assumed the title of King of Chūzan. When sending envoys to China, it followed the Chinese calendar; when paying tribute to our country, it used our era names. This situation of one nation belonging to two countries leaves unclear which nation it truly serves as a tributary state. For this reason, there are often those who question the propriety of its titles and appellations. I wish to present ten pieces of evidence to clarify this matter. Regarding the nation of Ryukyu: if we examine its topography, it is clearly an extension of our Kyushu mountain range that undulates and extends into the South Seas.
