琉球諸島は、九州南海諸島の南より起こり、南洋中に綿々と連なって列をなし、末端の勢いは西南に向かい、台湾島の東に至って止まる。北緯二十四度より二十八度四十分に至り、東経百二十二度五十分より百三十度十分に至る。西北は東シナ海に接し、東南は太平洋に境する。大小四十余島（古来三十六島とするが、一致しない）、その他群小の島嶼は数多い。その群島の位置、大勢は、中南北の三部に分かれて集まり鼎のように対峙している（これを古の中山・山南・山北の地とする者があるのは、旧説の誤りである）。その中部・南部の諸島は琉球藩に属し、北部の諸島は

The Ryukyu Islands begin south of the southern sea islands of Kyushu, extend continuously in chains across the southern ocean, with their end trending southwest, terminating east of Taiwan Island. They extend from 24 degrees to 28 degrees 40 minutes north latitude, and from 122 degrees 50 minutes to 130 degrees 10 minutes east longitude. The northwest borders the East China Sea, and the southeast borders the Pacific Ocean. There are over forty large and small islands (traditionally counted as thirty-six islands, though this number does not match), with numerous other small island groups. The position and general configuration of these island groups are divided and clustered into three parts—central, southern, and northern—standing in opposition like a tripod (those who consider these to be the ancient territories of Chuzan, Nanzan, and Hokuzan are following an erroneous old theory).
