○ 松前にある一つの島のうち、限られた範囲のみを松前の領分としている。
その一島の内を、主（じゅ）の場所と臣（しん）の場所とに割り当てている。
「場所」とは、領分と言うようなものである。いずれも海辺のみであり、
一場所はおよそ五十里ほど、あるいは七十里ほどで、島の周囲の浜に
各所に入り交じって領分がある。浜辺のみで、奥はすべて空き地であり、
人の住まない深山・広野ばかりである。さて、その場所を松前の町人たちが
それぞれの地頭（じとう）へ願い出て、蝦夷の土人（先住民）を介抱したい旨を
訴え出る。（以下続く）

○ Of the single island where Matsumae is located, only a limited portion is designated as Matsumae domain territory.
Within that one island, the territory is divided and allocated into "principal" (shu) places and "vassal" (shin) places.
A "place" (basho) is roughly equivalent to what one might call a domain or territory. In every case, these territories consist only of coastal areas;
one "place" spans approximately fifty ri, or in some cases seventy ri, and the various domain territories are interspersed at different points along the shores surrounding the island.
The territories consist solely of coastal strips, while the interior is entirely uninhabited open land — nothing but deep mountains and vast wilderness where no people dwell.
Now, the townspeople of Matsumae petition their respective domain lords (jitō), appealing with the request that they be permitted to look after the Ezo natives (indigenous people).
