…An Ainu man had come to this island (Uruppu/Urup) for the purpose of hunting, and upon discovering the drifted ship, he boarded it and found the vessel empty of any living soul, with only a single Russian corpse aboard. Looking over the cargo, he found it immense in quantity; among the goods were gold coins, silver coins, woolen broadcloth (*rasha*), scarlet cloth (*shōjōhi*), and various other fabrics and textiles, as well as truly rare and precious articles and fine goods — so numerous as to be beyond counting. Thinking to himself that, since only his own resources (*Hatsuha-ai*'s possessions) were at hand, and that this must be a gift bestowed upon him by Heaven, he gathered up every last treasure from the ship and concealed it deep in hiding, then set fire to the ship and burned it to the ground.
Now, in recent years a large Russian ship, which crossed the sea annually for the purpose of hunting, could be seen faintly in the far offing, gradually drawing closer, and it appeared that it would presently make for Uruppu Island to anchor there…

## (Left folio — main text)
…"Hatsuha-ai" reflected that, should it come to light that he had burned the Russian ship and plundered its cargo, the Russians aboard the arriving vessel might well suspect him and his companions of having murdered the crew as well. Without even taking stock of the weather conditions, he hastily loaded the treasures aboard nine Ainu vessels, and together with a party of over one hundred native crew members, set sail from Uruppu Island, intending to flee back to their home on Etorofu Island (Iturup Island). They left the shore and crossed the open sea, heedless even of the fierce tidal currents; but just then a violent wind blew up, and in the midst of the open water all nine vessels capsized, and every one of the hundred-odd Ainu perished.
Before long, the Russian ship arrived at Uruppu Island and came ashore, and searched the vicinity thoroughly…
