Rihachi of Okudo Village became the son-in-law of a man called Hyotoro — a native of Kamchatka (*Kamusasu*) who served as an interpreter for Japan — having married his younger sister. Katsuemon came to reside in a place called "Irukutsuko" (Irkutsk), near the royal capital of Russia. …they set sail from the port of "Yorowotarahan Erisko" (*Petropavlovsk*?), setting their course southward and putting out to sea — but whereabouts became unknown. This was related to me by the two men, Inyuyo and Sasunosukoi; yet I believe there is a deeper significance to this matter.
That great ship had set its course toward the lands of Ezo and Japan, and made landfall on the island of Karafuto (Sakhalin) in Western Ezo. Whether the trouble arose from disputes over trade with the native inhabitants of the island or for some other reason, a conflict erupted and grew into full-scale fighting; it appears that all the Russians aboard the ship were shot and killed. The ship then drifted and ran aground at a place called Atatsutoi, within Uruppu Island (Urup Island) in Eastern Ezo.
