エトロフ島のこと
エトロフ島は、クナシリ島の隣島であって、その島への渡り口となる西南の地の海辺に、険しくそびえ立つ峻山の麓に、「イトイヤ」・「ヘレタルベ」という二か所があり、これはクナシリ島へ渡海する船が天候をうかがう場所である。ここから北へ一里ほど行くと「モヨロ」と呼ばれる場所にアイヌの村がある。この村の乙名（おとな）を「ウヲシル」と言う。この乙名の漁場にあたる浜辺に、古い碇が三つある。その重さはおよそ七十貫目ほどである。松前漂流船留書（まつまえひょうりゅうせんとめがき）によって調べてみると、紀州薗村の堀川八右衛門の持ち船が沖で（以下次ページへ続く）

On the Island of Etorofu
Etorofu Island lies adjacent to Kunashiri Island. At the southwestern coastal approach to the island, beneath towering and precipitous mountains, are two places called "Itoiya" and "Heretatarube," which serve as shelters where ships awaiting favorable weather before crossing to Kunashiri Island take refuge. About one ri to the north of these places is an Ainu village called "Moyoro." The village elder (otona) is called "Woshiru." On the beach within this elder's fishing grounds, there are three old anchors, each weighing approximately seventy kan. Upon investigation through the Matsumae record of drifting vessels (Matsumae hyōryū-sen tomegaki), it was found that a vessel belonging to one Horikawa Hachiuemon of Sonomura in Kishū had drifted out to sea… (continues on the next page)
