　　き御腰物ニてかねを御打此かねの罰を蒙り候法も候へあそことは
　　不被仰候由御意ニて候ふ小刀を押折御すて候其御小刀の柄をふかう
　　清十郎拾ひ候とて悪しく申候
一　其時惣別城際の備は森かしけりを後ニ当てか山か高き所ニ取る
　　ものゝ由被仰候由
一　其時物見ニ御座候てさ川の川に付て御下り海はた波打際にて腰ゟ
　　城の内を御さげすみ御帰り候跡ゟ被参候御供の衆城際を乗通り
　　候を御しかり被成候惣別城際を通るもの程若城ゟつきて出候はゝ
一　其侭討死致へし逃たる見苦しく有へく候討取らるれは城の競【きほい＝勢い】
　　になるを知り候はてほれもの共にて候と御しかり候城を見る
　　には際ゟ乗廻して横ゟこそ見る作法なれと御意被成候つる

一　其時諏訪の原御本陣也物見に御出候間各は是ニ居て陣取可
　　仕とて内藤四郎左馬主水渡忠右筧助太服部半蔵おの〳〵
　　御残し五六騎若き衆被召連候御帰候て御陣屋を御覧被成候
　　各御呼数々御しかり候て不勘者なる陣の取様かな皆々は
　　合点可参と思召候つるに初心にて候とて御叱り各陣取り
　　直し始とうらおもてニなり始は城の方へ向ひ陣取候御意ニは
　　か様ニはやまかれ候城中々切て出ぬもの也其心あらは山ゟ何
　　方へ寄る時いたすへしはやか様ニ取まかれて城中の方便は夜討
　　計り也陣取定らぬ内ニ夜討うつもの也城ゟ出候ては討ず候
　　何方は案内者なれは何方ニなり共隠れ居て陣の後ゟ懸破り
　　て城へは入様ニ夜討うつものにてはまゝ其心得をしてうらを
　　本に城際の陣はからるもの也と御意にて御しかり候由

現代語訳

その御腰物（刀）で鐘をお打ちになった。「この鐘の罰を受ける法もあるが、あそことは申さない」との御意で、小刀を押し折ってお捨てになった。その御小刀の柄を深谷清十郎が拾ったということで悪く申された。

一　その時「総じて城際の備えは森や茂みを後ろに当てるか、山か高い所に取るものである」と仰せられた。

一　その時物見にお座しになって、酒匂川の川に沿って御下りになり、海端の波打ち際にて腰を下ろして城の内を御覧になって御帰りになった。後から参った御供の衆が城際を乗り通ったのを御叱りになった。「総じて城際を通る者ほど、もし城から突いて出てきたならば、そのまま討死するであろう。逃げたのでは見苦しいであろうし、討ち取られれば城の勢いになることを知らない愚か者どもである」と御叱りになった。「城を見るには際から乗り回して横から見るのが作法である」と御意をなされたという。

一　その時諏訪の原が御本陣であった。物見にお出になる間、「各々はここにいて陣取りをするように」として、内藤四郎左衛門、馬主水、渡忠右衛門、筧助太夫、服部半蔵をおのおの御残しになり、五六騎の若い衆をお召し連れになった。御帰りになって御陣屋を御覧になり、各々をお呼びになって数々御叱りになった。「分からず屋な陣の取り方だな。皆々は合点するであろうと思っていたのに、初心者である」として御叱りになった。各々陣取りを直し始めて裏表になり、始めは城の方へ向かい陣取りした。御意には「このようにでは囲まれてしまう。城中から切って出ないものである。その心があるなら山からどの方へ寄せる時にするであろう。早くこのように取り囲まれて、城中の方便は夜討ちばかりである。陣取りが定まらないうちに夜討ちを打つものである。城から出ては討たない。どの方も案内者なので、どの方にでも隠れ居て陣の後ろから懸け破って城へ入るように夜討ちを打つものである。まさにその心得をして、裏を本として城際の陣は構えるものである」と御意にて御叱りになったという。

[Ieyasu] struck a bell with that sword of his. "There may be laws about receiving punishment for [striking] this bell, but I will not mention that place," he said, and broke and discarded the short sword. Fukaya Seijiūrō picked up the handle of that short sword, which was spoken of unfavorably.

1. At that time [Ieyasu] said, "Generally, when positioning forces near castle walls, one should place forest or thickets at the back, or position on mountains or high ground."

1. At that time, while conducting reconnaissance, he went down along the Sakawa River and sat at the water's edge by the seashore to observe the interior of the castle before returning. He scolded the retainers who followed behind and rode directly past the castle walls. "Those who pass near castle walls are the most likely, should [the enemy] sally forth from the castle, to die in battle on the spot. It would be unseemly to flee, and if they are killed, it would boost the castle's morale - these fools do not understand this," he scolded them. "The proper way to observe a castle is to ride around from the perimeter and view it from the side," he declared.

1. At that time, Suwanohara was the main camp. While he went out for reconnaissance, [he ordered] "Each of you remain here and establish positions," leaving behind Naitō Shirōzaemon, Umanushi Mizu, Watari Tadauemon, Kakehi Sukedayū, and Hattori Hanzō respectively, and took along five or six young retainers. When he returned and inspected the camp quarters, he summoned everyone and scolded them repeatedly: "What an ignorant way to position the camp! I thought you would all understand, but you are all beginners," and scolded them. When everyone began repositioning the camp, they ended up back-to-front, initially positioning to face toward the castle. His opinion was: "This way you will be surrounded. [The enemy] will not sally forth from the castle to fight. If they have such intentions, they would advance from the mountains in whichever direction. Being quickly surrounded like this, the castle's only recourse is night attacks. They will launch night attacks before the camp positions are settled. They will not fight when sallying from the castle. Since each direction has local guides, they can hide anywhere and break through from behind the camp formations to return to the castle - that is how they conduct night attacks. With precisely this understanding, one should construct camps near castle walls with the rear as the primary concern," he said as he scolded them.
