遣候いまた取候はぬ程に帰り候て其段可申上と存し帰る時御
城の道にて親左平次ニ逢候左平次何方へ参候由尋申候へは小平
太右の通り申候左平次おしくて其身せかれニ而候共左様の御使
に参りたらはとり仕廻迄居て手伝して取て返事を申上候もの
也と申候へは尤と思ひ則かへり清右所ニて右のものとり候時助とり
して其後帰り御返事申上候へは権現様親の子にて候と御笑言被成候

一 物具して腰当にて刀さしたらば必〳〵陣屋に抜て試て出へき
也とかたり被申候
一 七郎右衛門稲垣平右へんを越し御出候へと申遣候夜の事にて候平右
御越候へは物も云ずに涙を流し何事にてかあると無心件候
つれは後新十郎高名いたし手柄いたし候由各ゟ申来候ニ
付候ては参候宮地源蔵呼出し其段かたらせなどして七郎
右衛門申様ニ新十郎は大形能生れ付たり形気も分別も我等
に増たり去程にもし此心いかゝ候はんと夜昼無心計候ひつる
に最早家をつゝけ候とて悦ひ語り被申候由平右衛門殿後ニ
物語被申候堀川にて十六の年の高名也と語り被申候
一 山本道斗物語ニすわの原にて城へおし込て候時門をたて申候
まゝ馬上ニて下知ニ門の扉にあて腰ためにして扉うてと
申候へは各鉄炮にて扉を打候へは押へ候もの共のきて心安く門へ
はいり候由語被申候也
現代語訳
遣わした。「まだ捕らえていない」ということで帰ろうとして、その旨を申し上げようと思い帰る時、御城への道で親左平次に会った。左平次が「どちらへ参られるか」と尋ね申すと、小平太は右の通り申した。左平次は「惜しいことで、その身一人では急がれることであろうが、そのような御使いに参ったならば、捕り物が済むまで居て手伝いをして捕らえて返事を申し上げるものである」と申すと、もっともと思い、すぐに帰って清右の所でその者を捕らえる時に手助けをして、その後帰って御返事を申し上げると、権現様は「親の子である」と御笑いになられた。
《物前の言》
一 戦場においては、どのような者にも、言葉遣いに気を配るのが良いものである。常に可笑しく馬鹿げたことと思うようなことも、後々役に立つものである。第一に口をきけば風采が良いとして誉められるとのことである。
《刀の腰当のこと》
一 武具を着けて腰当てをして刀を差したならば、必ず陣屋で抜いて試してから出るべきであると語り申された。
一 七郎右衛門が稲垣平右に「こちらへ越してお出でください」と申し遣わした。夜のことであった。平右が越して来ると、物も言わずに涙を流すので、何事かあるのかと無心に尋ねたところ、「後（息子の）新十郎が高名をし手柄をした由を皆から申し来たので」ということで参ったのであった。宮地源蔵を呼び出し、その段を語らせなどして、七郎右衛門が申すには「新十郎は大体良い生まれつきである。容姿も気質も分別も我等に勝っている。それほどであるが、もしこの心がどうであろうかと夜昼無心に心配していたが、最早家を継続できる」として喜び語り申されたとのことである。平右衛門殿が後に物語り申されたのは、堀川にて十六歳の年の高名であると語り申されたとのことである。
一 山本道斗の物語に、諏訪原にて城へ押し込んだ時、門を閉てているので、馬上にて下知に「門の扉に当てて腰を据えて扉を撃て」と申すと、皆が鉄砲にて扉を撃つと、押さえていた者共が来て、心安く門へ入ったと語り申されたとのことである。

《Words on the Battlefield》
1. On the battlefield, it is good to match one's words appropriately to any type of person. Even things that normally seem foolish or ridiculous can prove useful later. First of all, if one speaks well, one will be praised for good bearing.
《About Sword Belt Guards》
1. When armed with equipment, wearing a belt guard, and carrying a sword, one should definitely draw it at the camp to test it before going out, he said.
1. Shichirōemon sent word to Inagaki Heiemon saying "Please come over here." It was at night. When Heiemon came over, [Shichirōemon] shed tears without speaking, so [Heiemon] asked innocently what was the matter. [Shichirōemon] had come because everyone had told him that his son Shinjūrō had achieved distinction and performed meritorious deeds. He called out Miyaji Genzō to tell the details, and Shichirōemon said: "Shinjūrō is generally well-born by nature. His appearance, temperament, and judgment surpass mine. Being so capable, I worried day and night about what his heart might be like, but now the family line will continue," and he spoke with joy. Heiemon later told this story, saying it was about distinction achieved at Horikawa when [Shinjūrō] was sixteen years old.
1. In Yamamoto Dōto's story, when they stormed into the castle at Suwarahara, the gate was barred, so from horseback he commanded "Press against the gate doors, brace yourselves, and shoot the doors!" When everyone shot at the doors with guns, those who had been defending came out, and they were able to enter the gate easily, he said.
