一 台徳院様【秀忠】の御代の時高坂甚内とて盗人の張本有し勝れたる故
にたすけ御置き世上の盗人を御改めさせ候ひつる甚内語り
申候忍の時竹やぶなとへは入らぬもの也寝鳥さわけは亭主用心
するもの也

一 盗人を追て行ニ跡に立て追へは先のもの立かへり刀にて払へは必首
に当る也逃るものゝ左の方ニ添ふて追ふものとかたりき
一 ある所に盗人つきて候を甚内に見せ候へは折節雪ふり候つる足
跡をみて是は物を取たる盗人ニて候由申候を何とて左様に
申そと尋候へは足跡深き浅き跡雪の上ニ見へ候へは土蔵の上を
切りはいり候それを見て又とかく引入て御入候由申候土蔵は上ゟ
切り候習なれ共ケ様ニ其外の物を取るやうには知られてはなら
ぬ事也と申候き

一 同人申候盗人用心は薬師の前地蔵の後と申候薬師は八日地蔵講は
廿四日也廿五日ゟ七日迄は月も暗く闇に候故也惣別夜詰久しき
四ツ過迄居る処は取にくゝ宵ゟ忍ひ鳥前ニ仕廻候はねは先々にて
顕るゝもの也と語りき
一 鈴縄とて鷹の鈴を十斗【ばかり】細き縄に付て旅なとにてははいり口
に引はり候へは入にくき由申候
一 盗人を人ことにこはきものと思ふ臆病者のしはさにて候女に
追れ候ても逃んと斗【ばかり】思ふものにて候あやかしも二度三度迄こはく
あふなく思ひ候忍ひつけ候へは取んと思ふはかりにて候おそろし
き事忘れ申候其証拠ニハ盗人ニ追れて立かへり勝負仕候
志あるましき由かたり申候

異見・戒めに作り置くのを、人はことに軽く聞くと語った。
《盗人を御助け》
一 台徳院様（秀忠）の御代の時、高坂甚内という盗人の張本があった。優れていた故に助け置かれ、世上の盗人を御改めさせられた。甚内が語って申すには、「忍びの時、竹やぶなどへは入らないものである。寝鳥が騒げば亭主が用心するものである」。
《盗人を追う心得》
一 盗人を追って行くのに、後ろに立って追えば、先の者が立ち返り刀で払えば必ず首に当たる。逃げる者の左の方に添って追うものだと語った。
一 ある所に盗人が付いているのを甚内に見せると、折節雪が降っていた足跡を見て、「これは物を取った盗人である」と申した。なぜそのように申すのかと尋ねると、「足跡の深い浅いが雪の上に見える。土蔵の上を切って入った。それを見て、また何かと引き入れて御入りになった」と申した。「土蔵は上から切るのが習いであるが、このようにその他の物を取るようには知られてはならない事である」と申した。
《盗人の用心》
一 同人が申すには、「盗人の用心は薬師の前、地蔵の後」と申した。薬師は八日、地蔵講は二十四日である。二十五日から七日までは月も暗く闇であるからである。総じて夜詰めが長く、四つ過ぎまで居る処は取りにくく、宵から忍んで鳥の鳴く前に仕舞わねば、先々にて現れるものであると語った。
一 鈴縄といって、鷹の鈴を十ばかり細い縄に付けて、旅などでは入り口に引き張ると、入りにくいと申した。
一 盗人を人はことに恐ろしいものと思うが、「臆病者のしわざである。女に追われても逃げようとばかり思うものである。妖怪も二度三度まで恐ろしく危なく思うが、忍びつけると取ろうと思うばかりである。恐ろしいことを忘れ申す。その証拠には、盗人に追われて立ち返り勝負をする志があるまい」と語り申した。

《Pardoning Thieves》
1. During the reign of Taitokuin-sama (Hidetada), there was a master thief named Kōsaka Jin'nai. Because he was skilled, he was pardoned and made to reform the thieves in society. Jin'nai said: "When sneaking in, one should not enter bamboo groves and such. If sleeping birds are disturbed, the master of the house will become vigilant."
《Knowledge for Pursuing Thieves》
1. When pursuing thieves, if you stand behind and chase them, when the one ahead turns back and strikes with his sword, it will surely hit your neck. One should pursue by staying to the left side of the fleeing person, he said.
1. When Jin'nai was shown a place where a thief had been, he looked at footprints in the snow that happened to be falling and said, "This is a thief who has stolen something." When asked why he said this, he replied: "The depth of the footprints can be seen in the snow. He cut through and entered from the top of the storehouse. Seeing this, he then somehow brought things inside." He said, "It is customary to cut into storehouses from above, but one must not let it be known that other things are being taken in this manner."
《Thieves' Precautions》
1. The same person said: "Thieves' precautions are 'before Yakushi, after Jizō.'" Yakushi is the 8th day, Jizō services are the 24th day. From the 25th to the 7th, the moon is dark and it is pitch black. Generally, where night watch lasts long until past the fourth hour [around 10 PM] is difficult to rob. If one does not sneak in from evening and finish before the birds crow, one will be discovered later, he said.
1. There is something called "bell rope" - about ten hawk bells attached to thin rope. When traveling, if you string this across the entrance, it becomes difficult to enter, he said.
1. People generally think thieves are fearsome, but "it is the work of cowards. Even when chased by women, they only think of escaping. Even with supernatural beings, they think them frightening and dangerous two or three times, but once they become accustomed to sneaking, they only think of stealing. They forget fearful things. The proof of this is that when chased by thieves, they would have no will to turn back and fight," he said.
