一中村式部少輔居申候後駿河の御城に堀向に桜の並木候つるを
　権現様御覧候て式部少輔物馴候はす候堀向駒寄にてもあれは

　木は敵のみかくし竹たばの便になるよし被仰候つる也
一大坂の御定番阿部備中高木主水稲垣摂津守被仰付候時
　台徳院様御意に大手御門は阿部備中京橋口は主水玉造口は摂津
　守可相守候惣して権現様被仰置候城代なとは心得可有し事也
　古今城は乗取に少の城も力責無理には取らぬもの也殊に大坂なと
　は丈夫に御普請被仰付候右の三口さへよく堅め候て大橋の御門に鉄
　炮百二百置候はゝ中々攻取事有ましく候御本丸は面裏二口なれは
　両番頭御番衆五十人つゝ其外内の者共可有之候へはたとひ外曲輪破れ
　候ても御本丸はかりにても百日も二百日も防くへし惣別初心なるもの

現代語訳

なされた。皆は敵が間近に迫り早く退きたく思えども、御退きにならなかった。ついに親殿様が御先へお退きになった。殿軍を三郎様がなされた。御年十七の御歳である。皆感心申し上げた。

一　台徳院様が嶋田弾正を町奉行の時にお教えになった。公事（裁き）に負けが決まって切腹しなければならない者も、しばらく待て。助けてよい理を分別してやれと仰せになったという。

一　中村式部少輔がおりました後、駿河の御城に堀向に桜の並木があったのを、権現様が御覧になって「式部少輔は物に慣れていない。堀向は駒寄せでもあれば、敵が仕寄りの便になるものである。竹束などを付けるがよいものである。まして並木は敵の身隠し、竹束の便になる」と仰せになったのである。

一　大坂の御定番に阿部備中・高木主水・稲垣摂津守を仰せ付けられた時、台徳院様の御意に「大手御門は阿部備中、京橋口は主水、玉造口は摂津守が相守るべし。総じて権現様が仰せ置かれた城代などは心得があるべきことである。古今城は乗っ取りに、少しの城も力攻めで無理には取らぬものである。殊に大坂などは丈夫に御普請を仰せ付けた。右の三口さえよく堅めて、大橋の御門に鉄砲百丁二百丁置けば、なかなか攻め取ることはあるまい。御本丸は表裏二口なれば、両番頭・御番衆五十人ずつ、その外内の者どもがあるであろうから、たとえ外曲輪が破れても、御本丸ばかりでも百日も二百日も防ぐべし。総別初心な者どもは矢狭間を一人当て二人当てと人数が不足するなどと申す。結局城には大勢籠るから、誰人も疑いが出来て悪しきものである。御門さえよく堅めれば乗っ取ることはならぬ。一大事は籠城に三つあり。調略と、内肝と、付け入りである。まず調略は、城中の者に縁者親類または近付きに付けて金銀を遣い、褒美を何ほど遣わそうとも手引きせよなどと言って引き入れること。また内肝というのは城中の者どもの誰彼は仲良く仲悪しきなどと言って

1. When Taitokuin-sama appointed Shimada Danjō as town magistrate, he taught him: "Even those who have lost a court case and must commit seppuku - wait a while. Help them and discern good reasoning to save them," he said.

1. After Nakamura Shikibu-shōyū was there, there was a row of cherry trees along the moat at Suruga Castle. When Gongensama saw this, he said: "Shikibu-shōyū is inexperienced with such matters. If the moat side serves as a horse approach, it becomes convenient for enemy siege approaches. It would be better to install bamboo bundles and such. Moreover, the tree line provides the enemy with cover and convenience like bamboo bundles."

When Abe Bitchū, Takagi Mondo, and Inagaki Settsu-no-kami were appointed as permanent Osaka garrison commanders, Taitokuin-sama's intention was: "Abe Bitchū shall guard Ōte Gate, Mondo the Kyōbashi entrance, and Settsu-no-kami the Tamatsukuri entrance. Generally speaking, castle commanders appointed by Gongensama should have proper understanding. Throughout history, castles are taken by capture - even small castles are not taken by force through unreasonable direct assault. Especially Osaka and such places were built with strong fortifications. If these three entrances are well fortified and one or two hundred firearms are placed at Ōhashi Gate, it would be very difficult to capture by assault. Since the main keep has two entrances front and back, with both squad leaders and fifty guardsmen each, plus other internal personnel, even if the outer bailey is breached, the main keep alone could be defended for a hundred or two hundred days. Inexperienced men generally speak of assigning one or two men per arrow slit, saying there are insufficient personnel. In the end, when many troops are garrisoned in a castle, suspicions arise among everyone, which is harmful. If the gates are well fortified, the castle cannot be taken by assault. The greatest dangers in castle defense are three: strategic subversion, internal discord, and infiltration.
