候て度々雪隠を捨候はねは後は何共捨所無く迷惑候よし被

一 小太刀半七とて兵法修行のもの候つる鉄の扇をさし夫にて仕
合論兵法数度手柄顕候其弟子ニ台徳院様御尋被成候
何の別なる義なく面白なくとしと存かゝり候てしあい仕候極意
也と申上候へは事外御感被成候仕相も又物前にてもおもしろ
なと心を取むけ候へは恐しき事なく謀も出来動転無しと古
人申也同意也と御意被成喧嘩【𠵅】少の俄事ニも動転する故に
手廻おそく手前ぬるきもの也と各被申候也

一 惣別心かけは何方にても所を見合尤座敷にても何事あらは
としてかくしてと不断心懸候へは物早き由古き衆物語候
《割書：生地｜死地》【上段に朱書】
一 人間は死地に入る事第一也惣別生地死地とて二ツあり生地はいきん
とおもふ死地は死にきる事也腹なときるもの又は大形のもの
最【㝡】後ニなれはあしき事無く是死地に入る故也思切る故也昔より
十死一生の合戦は仕よく必勝もの也十死一生の合戦は人数立武略
無れは必負る由也窮鼠却て猫をかむといふに同し名大将は
我身斗りニあらす軍兵をすゝめいましめて死地に引入ル故
に最【㝡】期の働き手柄を顕はす常にもある事なりならぬ
奉公をすゝめ見届さするも同意也

一 はからさるニ城なと乗んと思ひ又は俄ニ合戦を致さんと思はゝ敵
の食する時分を考えへ朝かけ夕かけ也此方は能々したゝめし
て敵食せさる以前に懸るへし卯の上刻申の上刻夜は子ト丑の
時分也

一 物前にて鑓の持様竪にかつきて其侭打入よきやうに持へきなり
現代語訳
度々雪隠を捨てなければ、後は何ともいえず捨て所が無く迷惑するということを申されている。
《剣術者》
一 小太刀半七といって兵法修行の者がいた。鉄の扇を差し、それで試合や兵法論を数度行い手柄を現した。その弟子に台徳院様がお尋ねになった。「何の別なる義も無く、面白くないと思いつつも、かかっていって試合をするのが極意である」と申し上げたところ、格別にご感心になった。試合もまた実戦においても、面白いなどと心を奪われれば恐ろしいことは無く、謀略も生まれ動転しないと古人が申すのと同じ意味であるとの御意になった。喧嘩や些細な急な出来事にも動転するため、手回しが遅く、手前が鈍るものであると各々申されている。
《平常の心掛け》
一 総じて心掛けは、どこにいても場所を見定め、もっとも座敷にいても何事があったらこうしてああしてと、普段から心掛けていれば物事が早いと、古い衆が物語している。
《生地・死地》
一 人間は死地に入ることが第一である。総じて生地・死地といって二つある。生地は生きようと思うこと、死地は死に切ることである。腹を切るものまた大将のものは、最後になれば悪いことは無い。これは死地に入るためであり、思い切るためである。昔から十死一生の合戦は仕方良く必ず勝つものである。十死一生の合戦は人数や武略が無ければ必ず負けるということである。窮鼠かえって猫を噛むというのと同じである。名大将は我が身だけでなく軍兵を励まし戒めて死地に引き入れるため、最期の働き手柄を現す。常にもあることでないことなら成らぬ奉公を勧め見届けさせるのも同じ意味である。
《不意討ちの死地》
一 思いがけず城などを攻めようと思い、または急に合戦をしようと思えば、敵の食事する時分を考えて、朝駆け・夕駆けである。こちらはよくよく準備して、敵が食事しない以前に駆けるべきである。卯の上刻、申の上刻、夜は子と丑の時分である。
《実戦での槍の持ち方》
一 実戦にて槍の持ち方は、縦に担いでそのまま打ち入るのに良いように持つべきである。

《Swordsmen》
1. There was a practitioner of military arts called Kodachi Hanshichi. He carried an iron fan and with it conducted matches and discussions of military strategy, distinguishing himself many times. When Taitokuin-sama inquired of his disciple, he replied: "There is nothing special about it - the secret is to engage in matches thinking it uninteresting and boring." This greatly impressed [Taitokuin-sama]. In matches as well as in actual combat, if one's mind is captivated by thoughts of it being interesting, there is nothing to fear, and strategies emerge without confusion - this accords with what the ancients said. In quarrels or sudden minor incidents, people become confused, making their responses slow and their techniques dull, as everyone says.
《Daily Mental Preparation》
1. Generally speaking, one should always assess locations wherever one may be - even in a sitting room, constantly thinking "if something happens, I'll do this and that." If one maintains this attitude regularly, one can respond quickly, as the old veterans tell us.
《Ground of Life and Ground of Death》
1. For humans, entering the ground of death is paramount. Generally, there are two kinds: ground of life and ground of death. Ground of life means wanting to live; ground of death means being resolved to die. Those who commit seppuku or great generals, when it comes to the end, have nothing wrong with them. This is because they enter the ground of death and are completely resolved. Since ancient times, desperate battles with odds of ten deaths to one life are fought well and surely won. Desperate battles without sufficient troops or strategy will surely be lost. It's the same as the saying "a cornered rat will bite the cat." Great generals not only consider themselves but also encourage and admonish their soldiers, leading them into the ground of death, thus achieving final deeds of valor. Even recommending and ensuring completion of service that would not normally be achievable has the same meaning.
《Ground of Death in Surprise Attacks》
1. When unexpectedly planning to assault a castle or suddenly engage in battle, consider the enemy's meal times - dawn attacks and evening attacks. Our side should prepare thoroughly and attack before the enemy has eaten. These times are: early morning (hour of the Rabbit), early evening (hour of the Monkey), and at night during the hours of the Rat and Ox.
