一 同人物語に石川新九数度の手柄刀尋常也平生ハ一段と
ほれもの也矢矧の退口の時鵜殿十郎三郎新九と一度ニのき候
敵つよく追懸候時十郎三郎是又かくれなき功者なれハ新九
がんしやうにて先立ニのき候時言葉をかけハかへすへし新九せり
合打るゝ間ににげのびんと思ひてことはをかけかへせと被申
ける時新九立帰り持たる鑓を横たへてたれもかへす我も
かへせといはれけれハやれたわけにけよとて二人なから又に
け候平生の利根と違候とて誉被申候由
一 いらふのき口の時敵強く追かけ候を次右衛門さい〳〵かへし合せ
〳〵ふせきてのき候其時はそりかさとて編笠のはのそり
たるをきて退けり敵よばハりかけてはそりかささりとてハ
見事也名乗候へ〳〵と言かけけるを名ハ無そとて名のらず
大井川を渡り向ひにて持たる鉄炮を黒野五郎大夫ニこれうて
我より上手也必打あてよとて渡し我を台ニして打てと
て川端にうつふしにねてうたせ候敵川半分へ五騎のり込一の
先の敵を川中へ打倒す夫ゟ敵つかすして敵はなれして内藤
四郎左筧助太なと次右先ハ何とて名のらせぬそ名乗たらハ
敵まての手柄にて有へきと被申候時ケ様の時ハ名のらぬも
の也敵名聞てよバりかけてさりとてハ見事也さ候へよと云
れたる時味方つゞかすしんがりの者一人うたれハ惣負
になるもの也と各同年年兄の衆に被申候を各聞て
尤と被申候由其時家康様ゟ黒野五郎大夫ニ御鉄炮御
持被成候を被下候後迄持申候つる

一 見付のき口の時大久保勘七坂の上石にけあがり先へ来ル
現代語訳
一 同人の話によると、石川新九は数度の手柄を立て、刀の腕前は尋常（並外れて優秀）である。平生は一段とぼんやりした者である。矢作川での退却の時、鵜殿十郎三郎と新九が一緒に退いた。敵が強く追いかけてきた時、十郎三郎はこれまた隠れもない功者なので、新九を案じて先に立って退いた時、言葉をかければ返すだろう、新九が競り合い打ち合っている間に逃げ延びようと思って言葉をかけ返せと申したところ、新九は立ち返り持っている槍を横に構えて「誰でも返せ、我も返せ」と言ったので、「やれ、たわけ者よ」とて二人とも一緒にまた逃げた。平生の利発さとは違うとて褒められた由である。
一 いらぶ（井伊谷）での退却の時、敵が強く追いかけてくるのを次右衛門がしきりに返し合わせて防いで退いた。その時は「反り笠」といって編笠の端が反ったものを着けて退いた。敵が呼ばわりかけて「その反り笠よ、見事である。名乗れ」と言いかけたのを、「名は無い」とて名乗らず、大井川を渡り対岸にて持っている鉄砲を黒野五郎大夫に「これを撃て、お前は我より上手である。必ず打ち当てよ」とて渡し、「我を台にして撃て」とて川端にうつ伏せに寝て撃たせた。敵が川半分へ五騎乗り込んだ時、一番先の敵を川中へ撃ち倒した。それから敵は近づかず敵は離れたので、内藤四郎左衛門、筧助太夫などが「次右衛門は何故名乗らせないのか。名乗ったならば敵までの手柄になっただろう」と申した時、「このような時は名乗らないものである。敵が名前を聞いて『よ、○○よ』と呼びかけて『それでは見事である、さあ勝負せよ』と言われた時、味方が続かず、しんがりの者一人討たれれば総負けになるものである」と各々の同年・年兄の衆に申したのを、各々聞いて「もっとも」と申した由である。その時家康様より黒野五郎大夫に御鉄砲をお持ちになっていたのをお下しになり、後まで持ち申していた。

1. According to the same person's story, Ishikawa Shinkyu accomplished meritorious deeds on several occasions, and his swordsmanship was extraordinary. In daily life, he was quite absent-minded. During the retreat at the Yahagi River, Udono Jūrōzaburō and Shinkyu retreated together. When the enemy pursued them strongly, Jūrōzaburō, being also a renowned tactician, took the lead in retreating out of concern for Shinkyu, thinking that if he called out to him, Shinkyu would respond, and while Shinkyu was competing and fighting, he could escape. When he called out "respond!", Shinkyu turned back, held his spear horizontally and said "Anyone come back, I too will come back." So [Jūrōzaburō] said "Oh, you fool!" and both fled together again. It is said he was praised as being different from his usual sharpness.
1. During the retreat at Irabu (Ii no ya), when the enemy pursued strongly, Jiuemon repeatedly turned back to fight them off and defend while retreating. At that time, he wore what was called a "curved hat" - a woven hat with curved edges - while retreating. When the enemy called out "You with the curved hat, splendid! Give your name!" he replied "I have no name" and did not identify himself. After crossing the Ōi River to the opposite bank, he gave his matchlock to Kurono Gorōdayū saying "Shoot this, you are more skilled than I. Be sure to hit the target," and told him "Use me as a rest to shoot," lying face down on the riverbank to let him shoot. When five enemy horsemen rode halfway into the river, he shot down the foremost enemy into the middle of the river. After that, the enemy did not approach and withdrew, so Naitō Shirōzaemon, Kakehi Sukedayū and others said "Why didn't Jiuemon give his name? If he had announced it, it would have been a feat worthy of the enemy's recognition." At this, he told his peers and elder colleagues, "In such situations, one does not give one's name. When the enemy hears your name and calls out 'Hey, so-and-so!' and says 'That's splendid, come and fight!', if allies don't follow and even one rearguard warrior is killed, it becomes a total defeat." Everyone who heard this said "Indeed, that's right." At that time, Lord Ieyasu bestowed upon Kurono Gorōdayū the matchlock he had been carrying, which [Kurono] continued to possess thereafter.
