て勘七郎か逃て息もおさまらぬに常のことくにためて

乗んとて大久保七郎右衛門思案して惣御家中の鉄炮を集

明日早天ニ味方原を引取て家康の家中能者多しと

へ聞へて一類中七郎右衛門手柄なる才覚と申候へハ則常源
七郎右衛門出来したり一類中のうちニ火ハかけぬか風上ニ火を
かけて被申候を各聞て尤功者即座の分別と誉候由

現代語訳
敵を三間ほどのところで鉄砲で撃ったが外した。これを家康様がご覧になって「勘七は逃げて息も落ち着かないのに、普通のように構えて撃ったために外れた。息が落ち着かない時は、銃床を両手で一束に取って撃つものである」とお教えになった由である。
一 三方ヶ原の敗戦の夜、このままにしておけば敵が夜討ちをかけるか、または明日も勝ちに乗ってくるだろうと、大久保七郎右衛門が思案して総御家中の鉄砲を集めさせた。敗軍の明け方、ようやく鉄砲二十四丁があったのを連れて、庠ヶ崖へ回り、信玄の本陣の方へ三丁ずつ撃たせた。敵は非常に騒ぎ、明日早朝に三方ヶ原を引き取って「家康の家中には有能な者が多いと見える。軽々しくは攻められない」と信玄が仰ったという。この事が三河へ聞こえて、一族中「七郎右衛門の手柄ある才覚だ」と申すと、すぐに常源が「七郎右衛門はうまくやったが、一族中のうちに火は掛けないか。風上に火を掛けて」と申したのを各々聞いて「もっとも、功者の即座の分別だ」と褒めた由である。

一 同じ時の退却で、渡辺半助という者が討死した。小阪新助が引きずって退こうとして手を取って引いたが、首が下がって引けなかった。七郎右衛門が馬上でこれを見て「手を取って引けば引かれないものだ。足を取って引け」と申されたので、足を取って早く引き退けて、敵に首を取られなかったと、新助が語り申した。
一 同じ時、相模が馬で退いた時、名前は忘れたが誰やらの新十郎殿が草臥れて討死しそうになり「後ろの馬に乗せてください」と言うので乗せたところ、むずとしがみ付いて二人で馬に乗って退いた。非常に馬が草臥れて危険な目に遭った。古参の衆がこれを見て「このような時は何と言われても決して二人で馬に乗せてはならない」と次右衛門に教えた由である。

Lord Ieyasu observed this and taught him: "Kanshichi missed because he aimed and shot in the usual manner while his breathing had not settled after fleeing. When your breathing is unsettled, you should grip the stock with both hands in one bundle and shoot."
1. On the night of the defeat at Mikatagahara, thinking that if left as is, the enemy would either launch a night attack or continue their winning streak the next day, Ōkubo Shichirōuemon devised a plan and had all the matchlocks in the household collected. At dawn after the defeat, he gathered the barely twenty-four matchlocks that were available, led them around to Shō-ga-gake cliff, and had them fire three guns at a time toward Shingen's main camp. The enemy was greatly disturbed, and the next morning they withdrew from Mikatagahara, with Shingen reportedly saying, "Ieyasu's retainers appear to have many capable men. We cannot attack them carelessly." When this news reached Mikawa and the clan members said "This was Shichirōuemon's meritorious strategy," Tsunemoto immediately responded, "Shichirōuemon did well, but shouldn't we set fires within the clan's area? Set fire upwind!" Everyone who heard this praised it as "Indeed, a tactician's immediate judgment."

1. During the same retreat, a man named Watanabe Hansuke was killed in battle. Kosaka Shinsuke tried to drag him away by taking his hand, but his head drooped and he could not be pulled. Shichirōuemon saw this from horseback and said, "If you take the hand to pull, he cannot be pulled. Take the feet and pull." So he took the feet and quickly pulled him away, preventing the enemy from taking his head, as Shinsuke later recounted.
1. At the same time, when Sagami was retreating on horseback, someone whose name I forget - some Shinjūrō-dono - became exhausted and near death, saying "Please let me ride on the horse behind you." When he was put on the horse, he clung tightly and they retreated with two people on the horse. The horse became extremely tired and they encountered great danger. Seeing this, the veteran warriors taught Jiuemon: "In such situations, no matter what is said, you must never let two people ride on one horse."
