暁（あかつき）といふ限（かきり）あり爰（こゝ）に
名（な）にしおふ青楼（せいろう）の栄（ゑい）
花（くは）はさくらに春（はる）の長（なか）
きをしらす郭公（ほとゝきす）に薄（うす）
着（き）をしらす秋（あき）たつ風（かせ）
に暮（くれ）の淋（さひ）しみをしらす
雪（ゆき）の降（ふる）日も寒（さむ）さを
知らすかゝる限（かきり）なきたの
しみこそまことの栄（ゑい）
花とはいふなるへしこの
比（ころ）一人の大尽（たいしん）来（きた）り戯（たはむれ）に
此里（このさと）の遊君（ゆうくん）の角力（すまひ）を
見まほしきよしを求（もと）む
里雀（りしやく）てふもの承（うけたまは）り四（し）
季（き）の花を名君（めいくん）の姿（すかた）に
よそへ春夏（はるなつ）を東（ひかし）と
さため秋冬（あきふゆ）を西（にし）と極（きは）
めて既（すて）にすまひを初
現代語訳
暁というものには限りがある。ここに
名高い遊郭の栄華は、
桜の花には春の長さを知らせず、ほととぎすには薄着の季節を知らせず、秋立つ風には夕暮れの寂しさを知らせず、雪の降る日も寒さを知らせない。このような限りない楽しみこそ、真の栄華というべきであろう。この頃、一人の大尽がやって来て、戯れにこの里の遊女たちの相撲を見たいという望みを申し出た。
里雀という者がこれを承り、四季の花を名だたる遊女の姿になぞらえ、春夏を東方と定め、秋冬を西方と決めて、既に相撲を始めようと

There is a limit to what is called dawn. Here in
this renowned pleasure quarter's splendor,
the cherry blossoms do not inform [the courtesans] of spring's length, the cuckoo does not tell them of light clothing, the autumn wind does not make them aware of evening's loneliness, and even on snowy days they know not the cold. Such limitless pleasure should truly be called splendor and prosperity. Recently, a wealthy patron came and playfully requested to see a sumo match among the courtesans of this quarter.
One called Risyaku (Village Sparrow) accepted this request, likening the flowers of the four seasons to the forms of renowned courtesans, designating spring and summer as the eastern side and determining autumn and winter as the western side, already beginning to start the sumo match
