湯のいつともわかす鳴鏑？なりとよみつゝわきいつる
みゆのたきちはみくまりの神のあらひかわきかへり
けふるほのけはかくつちの神のあらひかあなかしこ
かしことみれはあらひなす業にもあらすたけひ
なすわさにもあらすうつし身のなやみをいやしもろ〳〵
のやもひをいやすいちしろきみゆにそありけるあやし
くもくしきみゆかもそこもへはかたりつきにし国の名
の伊豆といへるはいつる湯のまくはしみ国さとの名の
あたみといふはあたらしくともしきみゆとはしり湯の
はやくさためし名にこそありけめ
廿九日 けふも雨をやみなし かの船よと浜へかへるたよりに
つけて家にふみもたらす人々旅の詩つくらんといふおのれも
先といふ韻をえたれは唯是西行非左遷といへる句の思ひ
いてらるゝにつけてそゝろこといひいてぬれと詩つくる事は
学はねはかゝやかしうてえもしるさす
晦日 雨よへのほとにはれて朝日はれやかにさしのほり海の
おもてなこやかなりむくつけ人々も此比の長雨にこうし
たらむけふはまたきより山に海にゆくかなたこなたに
心のいそかはしうてもくすたにかきあへす夕つかたかの
国人のたくみにてつくりなせる氷なりとて正矯もてくあす
ならては氷室のこほりも奉らさなるをけふはやうみん事は
かたくもかたき事なりけり

現代語訳
湯の出る音も分からず、鳴鏑のような音がなり響いて湧き出る
御湯の滝は、水分神の現れか、湧き返る
煙の炎は、火土神の現れか、ああ恐れ多い
恐れ多いことと見れば、荒々しい技でもなく、猛々しい
業でもなく、現世の人の悩みを癒し、もろもろの
病を癒す霊験あらたかな御湯なのであった。不思議で
神秘的な御湯であることよ。そこで、この辺りの名前を語り尽くせない国の名
伊豆というのは、出る湯の素晴らしさから、国や里の名の
熱海というのは、新しく珍しい御湯と知って、湯の
早く定まった名前なのであろう。
二十九日 今日も雨が止まない。あの船宿と浜へ帰る便りに
付けて家に手紙を届けてもらった。人々が旅の漢詩を作ろうという。自分も
「先」という韻を得たので、ただ「唯是西行非左遷」という句が思い
出されることにつけて、そぞろなことを言い出してしまったが、漢詩を作ることは
学んでいないので、書きにくくて書き記すこともできない。
晦日（三十日） 雨が夜のうちに晴れて、朝日が晴れやかに差し昇り、海の
表面も穏やかである。無骨な人々も、このごろの長雨にうんざり
していたのだろう、今日は早朝から山に海に行き、あちらこちらに
心せわしなくて、墨すら摺り合わせることができない。夕方、あの
国の人の職人が作り上げた氷だといって、正矯が持ってきた。明日
でなければ氷室の氷も献上されないだろうが、今日は見ることは
非常に困難で貴重なことである。

The sound of the hot spring water emerging is unclear, making a whistling sound like a humming arrow as it gushes forth.
The waterfall of sacred hot spring water—could this be a manifestation of the water deity? The water bubbles up,
The flames and smoke—could this be a manifestation of the fire-earth deity? How awesome and fearsome!
Looking upon this awesome sight, it is neither violent force nor fierce
power, but sacred hot spring water that heals the sufferings of mortal beings and cures various
ailments. What mysterious and wondrous sacred water this is! Therefore, speaking of the names of this area—the indescribable country name
of Izu comes from the excellence of the emerging hot springs, and the name of the province and village,
Atami, comes from recognizing this as new and precious sacred water, and the hot spring's
name was established early on.
29th day: Today too the rain does not cease. Using the opportunity of people returning to that inn and the beach,
I had letters delivered to my home. People say they want to compose travel poetry. I too
received the rhyme "sen" (先), so the phrase "It is only westward travel, not exile" came to
mind, which led me to speak random thoughts, but since I have not
studied poetry composition, it is awkward and I cannot even write it down.
Last day of the month (30th): The rain cleared during the night, and the morning sun rose brilliantly, with the ocean's
surface calm and peaceful. Even the rough people who had been frustrated
by the recent long rains, today from early morning go to the mountains and sea, here and there with
restless hearts, unable even to grind ink properly. In the evening, someone brought
ice made by craftsmen of that province, which Masatada brought. Tomorrow
the ice from the ice house will not yet be presented, but to see it today is
an extremely difficult and precious thing.
