Various Matters Concerning Gates 1. Regarding gate passage permits: from samurai to minor officials, no seal (hangyō) is required; from the ittō rank, either with a seal or by going directly to make the request, it shall be granted accordingly. However, Buddhist monk assistants (bōzu kogashira) have traditionally passed without permits. 1. When sending one's own retainers outside the gate on errands and having them stay overnight, this must be reported up to the inspectors (metsuke). After acknowledgment, it shall be communicated to the gate. Of course, it must be conveyed that this should be reported to the gate keeper. 1. Regarding Buddhist monks coming from the domain and similar persons from outside the gate requesting one night's lodging: However, there are precedents, and it depends on instructions given 1. When women from outside the gate stay overnight and visit those on regular duty (teizume), this is acceptable with prior acknowledgment. Of course, even if on regular duty, it shall not become cohabitation with men. 1. When ladies of retainer households go outside the gate for overnight stays, permission must be obtained with a written statement (kōjōgaki). However, for day trips, it is sufficient to use a delivery note (okuri-fuda) to the gate 1. When samurai messengers and others go outside the gate at night on official business, when there is direct permission from the secretaries' office (yūhitsu-beya) to the gate office, for matters concerning foot soldiers (okachi) and below, even if on official business, if there is notification to the inspector, it shall be ordered to the gate office 1. Regarding caretakers (rusuidor): when they go out at night on official business, they give permission themselves. The same applies when sending out messengers. 1. When ladies from retainer households in permanent residence (teifu) use palanquins from within the gate. Regarding brides during wedding ceremonies at the gate entrance
