Regulations for Retinue Procedures
1. When proceeding to the main castle (Honmaru), one shall dismount in front of the bridge guardhouse outside the third gate of Ōte.
2. For New Year's, the five seasonal festivals, Hassaku, year-end, and other occasions when receiving gifts of wild geese and skylarks, as well as for general attendance "or ceremonial matters," when proceeding to the castle, one shall pass through the Inner Sakurada Gate to the Western Citadel (Nishinomaru), and dismount in front of the Ōte Bridge.
3. When proceeding to the Western Citadel, outside the Inner Sakurada Gate behind Lord Matsudaira Hizennokami's residence, various daimyo retinues wait "at the designated place" in the same manner. On ceremonial days when it becomes crowded, they shall wait in front of Lord Matsudaira Ukon-shōgen's residence.
4. On ceremonial days when proceeding to the Western Citadel, one shall proceed to the castle with a reduced retinue from the Ōte Gate. When proceeding to the castle at irregular times, all retainers shall accompany from outside the Sakurada Gate.
5. When the Three Houses (Gosanke) are on duty, one shall dismount outside the front gate.
However, when the front gate is open, the advance palanquin bearers shall not enter within the gate.
6. When visiting Ueno Shrine and all the mausoleums, as well as the mausoleums at Zōjō-ji Temple, one shall dismount in front of the Niō Gate.
However, when visiting the mausoleum of Lord Taitokuin, one shall dismount not at the Niō Gate, but in front of the aforementioned bridge.
