なるに目を覚し見れは土の中にありさては我身は死て葬られたる

罵り騒いではてしがないだけでなく、しきりに「帰れ帰れ」と何度も押し戻すので、どうしようもなく少し離れてよろめくのを見ながら後ろから行くと、なんとか自分の家の入り口の道によろめき入るのを見ているうちに、地震が揺り出して辺りの家々もきしみ軋み、あの女も道中に転び倒れ、夢のような心地がして立ち返って見ると、本町にある主人の家も倒れ損なって入ることもできないので、知り合いの人のところに避難した。さて桶町にある某の家は倒れなかったので、主人はどうしただろうかと亀の尾に来て尋ねたが、ただ騒がしくて答える人さえいないので、あちこち縁のある方を尋ねて歩き回ったが行方は知れなかった。七日に家の入り口に落ち積もった塗り込めの土が山のようになっているのを、人を大勢集めて鋤や鍬で掘らせて見ると、その底がうごめくのを怪しいと見ていると、やがて白い腕がぬくぬくと出てきた。人々は驚いてしばしためらっていたが、少々年老いた者が後から「ためらうな、鍬は置いて手で土を分けよ」と急がせたので、やがて掘り出して見ると、それは家の主人であった。地震の揺れも知らず、土に埋もれたのも知らず、少々冷たくなって目を覚まして見ると土の中にいた。「さては我が身は死んで葬られたのであろうか。こうして蘇った上はなんとかして這い出よう」と様々にしたけれども叶わず、身は疲れて呼び叫んでも声さえかれて、どうしようもないので思うには「どうせ長く生きられる命ではない。それならば尊い法師が行うという入定とやらをしよう」と思って、念仏ばかり唱えて
