深く常に経陀羅尼なと／誦（ズ）しけれは親とも出家させて比叡の山
に登しゝに功つもりて天台の律師に迄なりて横川の延命院に住
しを猶世をいとひて先つ年山科のほとりに退き住けりこの八月故
郷近江の八幡なる俗縁の方へ文の便りに言ひおこせけるやうは九月
の廿八日近江国なゐつよくゆるへし又十月二日には武蔵の国なゐ
ゆるへしとりわきて江戸のわたり強くゆりぬへけれはその由江戸の
ゆかりへもいひ知らしてよとねもころにいひおこせけるされとま
ことゝもなしかたけれは等閑に打過しに九月廿八日近江国なゐい
たくゆりしかは扨は誠なりけりと思へと江戸へいひゆかんもはるかなる
道の程にてはた日数せまりぬされはとていひやらてをかんも律師
の志をもとかんと思ひわつらひて其あすの日人をたてゝ十月
七日のひ江戸石町なる某の許へ其文もてこしとなんこのこと金
吹町なる播磨屋新右衛門に召仕ハるゝ幸助といふものゝ物語なり
○此程おほやけよりの仰事にて町のことゝる人々本町なる亀の尾
といふ茶亭に出はりて市人の頭たちしを呼つとへひか心得す
ましき由いひさとす事なん候ける桶町に住る某も二日の宵より
参りたりしに寒しとて酒あたゝめさせて独していやのみに飲
て人心地もなきまてゑひたりけれはかゝるもの此むしろにつらなら
んはえうなきのみかはあやまちもいてきぬへしとて此家の者も女
に手をとらして送りかへしつるに道すからあらぬ事ともいひ

深く、常に経や陀羅尼などを誦していたので、親も出家させて比叡山に登ったところ、功徳が積もって天台の律師にまでなり、横川の延命院に住んでいたが、なお世を厭って先年山科のあたりに退いて住んでいた。この八月、故郷近江の八幡にある俗縁の方へ文の便りに言い送ったのは「九月二十八日、近江国で地震が強く起こるだろう。また十月二日には武蔵国で地震が起こるだろう。とりわけ江戸のあたりが強く揺れるだろうから、そのことを江戸の縁者にも知らせてほしい」と懇切に言い送ったのである。しかし、まことのこととも思えなかったので、いい加減に過ごしていたところ、九月二十八日に近江国で地震がひどく揺れたので、さてはまことであったかと思ったが、江戸へ知らせようにも遥かな道のりで、また日数も迫ったので、といって知らせずにおくのも律師の志を無駄にしようかと思い悩んで、その翌日人を立てて、十月七日に江戸石町のある人の許へその文を持って来させたということである。この話は金吹町にある播磨屋新右衛門に仕えている幸助という者の物語である。

This past August, he sent word in a letter to secular relatives in his hometown of Hachiman in Omi Province, saying: "On the 28th day of the 9th month, there will be a strong earthquake in Omi Province. Also, on the 2nd day of the 10th month, there will be an earthquake in Musashi Province. Edo in particular will shake strongly, so please inform your relatives in Edo of this as well." He sent this message earnestly. However, since it didn't seem believable, they passed it by carelessly. But when Omi Province shook severely on the 28th day of the 9th month, they thought "So it was true after all." Yet to send word to Edo was a long journey, and time was running short.
