中へ落入たり上らんとするにはや家潰れかゝり然るに此家の引窓
幸にして穴蔵の上になりたり再上らんとするに火焼移りしかはし
はらく地に臥てあつさをこらゆる事数刻なりしか下の方なれは強
く煙【烟】も入らさりしにや引窓よりは息も通ひて鎮火の後火中を遁れ
出て命助りたり

在合ふ所の銅壷釜の類より手許の器に至に迄手にあふ丈は穴蔵へ収
め置土等かたの如くなしつゝやかてこゝを立退く迚在り合ふ酒を残ら
すも惜しとしたゝかに吞て主の居る所へ尋ね行て此由を語りけるさ

From the commotion around he knew there was a fire. However, not knowing there had been an earthquake, he wondered strangely why everyone had panicked and fled leaving behind household goods. While thinking this odd, he gathered everything he could get his hands on from copper pots and kettles to utensils at hand and stored them in the cellar, packing them down with earth and such. As he was about to leave this place, thinking it a waste to leave behind all the sake that was there, he drank heartily and went to find where his master was to tell him what had happened. Thus this house alone was able to preserve its kitchen utensils, and they praised the drunk man's achievement and decided not to dismiss him after all.
