家の圧【壓】に打れて即死すあるしは是を知らす然るに母は家の下
になりたれは屋の棟を穿ちて助出さんとせしに塗家といふ物に
して瓦の下に土を重る事厚く其下に厚き板を打其次に天井
板ありて容易に毀つ事かたし人手をかりて漸くにして鋸もて
垂木（タルキ）を切りて助出せり宵より来り居し近隣の幼きものは此
時残らす助りたり下男は土蔵の壁の落重りたるに埋れて首計
をあらはし身体働かれすこれも漸くにして土を除て助出しつ
手代房吉といへるも家の下より助出せり《割書：是は物のひまより手許出｜したるか此上を人の渡り》

止む事を得すしてこゝを去りしかもし菩提所大恩寺へ立退し事も
やとかしこに至りて尋ねんとせしにはや此寺も潰れて住持も圧【壓】にう
たれて寂せしと聞り廓中を退し時家々の下に男女の声ありて助
てくれは焼死るはあつやたえかたやと口々に号【號】叫ふするを聞につけ
むねつぶるゝ計なりしが妻子の安否も聞かぬ内はこころならすしかも
衆人の難を一人して救ふへき根もあらされは聞捨にして逃退し
より火鎮りて後妻子の屍を繹（タヅネ）【「譯」とあるは誤記】出して愁傷落涙停かたかりしとなん

どこへ行ったのか分からず、この家の下にいてすでに死んでいるのか、もしかすると命があるかもしれないと、火が燃え来るまで声の限り呼び続けること数時間に及んだが答えがない。次第に激しい火が近づいてきて留まることができなくなったので、他人の勧めに任せて止むを得ずここを去った。もしかすると菩提寺の大恩寺へ避難しているかもしれないとそこに至って尋ねようとしたが、すでにこの寺も倒壊して住職も下敷きになって亡くなったと聞いた。廓中を退避する時、家々の下に男女の声があって「助けてくれ、焼け死んでしまう、熱い、耐え難い」と口々に号叫するのを聞くにつけ、胸が潰れるばかりであったが、妻子の安否も分からないうちは心ならずも、しかも多くの人の災難を一人で救うべき力もないので、聞き捨てにして逃げ去った。火が鎮まった後、妻子の遺体を探し出して愁傷落涙が止まらなかったという。

However, it was a storehouse-style building with thick layers of earth piled under the tiles, thick boards underneath that, and ceiling boards below, making it difficult to break through easily. With the help of others, they finally managed to cut through the rafters with a saw and rescue those trapped. All the neighborhood children who had been there since evening were saved at this time. A servant was buried under the collapsed storehouse walls with only his head showing and unable to move his body - he too was gradually rescued by removing the earth. A clerk named Bōkichi was also rescued from under the house. As the fierce fire gradually drew near and he could no longer remain, he reluctantly left the place at others' urging. Thinking they might have evacuated to their family temple Daion-ji, he went there to inquire, but learned that this temple had already collapsed and the head priest had also died, crushed underneath. When evacuating the quarter, he heard voices of men and women from under the houses crying "Help us! We'll burn to death! It's hot! Unbearable!" - hearing this made his heart feel as though it would break. Though his heart was unwilling while not knowing his wife and children's safety, and since he alone had no power to save the many people in distress, he had no choice but to ignore their cries and flee. After the fire subsided, he searched out the bodies of his wife and child, and his grief and tears knew no end.
