以上竹島氏譚なり

〇銀座人辻伝【傳】右衛門青楼【せいろう：遊女のいるところ】に遊ひ酒に酔ふて臥たりしか地震の時二階
傾きて溝の上へ倒れかゝりしに目覚て見れは畳の上なから屋根なく
星のきらめくを見る幸にして遊女とゝもに命全き事得たり《割書：雲隺堂話》
〇画人鈴木其一の男守一青楼岡本屋のあるしと懇意にて二日の夜もかし

れとも脇はさる【挟る】もむへなり家内の男女圧【壓】にうたれしもあるへし又屋根

叫ひしか次第に声よはり程過て後声止たるは各死したりと覚えて更に
心細くいかにもして遁れ出んともかけともせんすへなし其内火気移
りて障子の倒れかゝりたるかた明るくなりけるを見て透間ある方を
知り匍匐（ハラバヒ）して逃れ出たり夫より家に帰りしに下谷坂本なる《割書：町家にて｜土人森川》

○銀座の人、辻伝右衛門が遊郭で遊び、酒に酔って臥していたが、地震の時に二階が傾いて溝の上へ倒れかかった。目覚めて見ると畳の上にいるが屋根がなく、星のきらめくのが見える。幸いにして遊女とともに命を全うすることができた。（雲鶴堂の話）

井の間に挟まれて無事であった。狼狽し慌てて、手近にあった燭台で穴を開けようとしたが、脇が挟まれてどうにもならない。家の中の男女で圧死した者もいるだろう。また屋根の下になって出ることができない私のような者もいて、ここかしこで苦痛に迫られて叫んだが、次第に声が弱くなり、時間が経った後に声が止んだのは各々死んだためと思われ、いっそう心細くなった。なんとかして逃れ出ようと思うがどうしようもない。そのうち火が移って障子の倒れかかった方が明るくなったのを見て、隙間のある方を知り、這って逃げ出した。それから家に帰ったところ、下谷坂本にある（町家で土地の人が森川屋敷という所である）父の家も潰れ、其一の孫娘も（山本素堂の妻である）泊まり合わせていて潰れ死にしたという。（勝田三左衛門殿の話）

○Tsuji Den'emon, a man from Ginza, was visiting a brothel and had fallen asleep drunk when the earthquake struck. The second floor tilted and collapsed over a ditch. When he awoke, he found himself still on the tatami mats but with no roof above, seeing the twinkling stars. Fortunately, both he and the courtesan survived unharmed. (Story from Unkakudō)
○Morichi, son of the painter Suzuki Kiitsu, was on friendly terms with the master of the Okamotoya brothel and had gone there on the night of the second for conversation when suddenly the earthquake struck and the house began to collapse. With no time to escape, he tried to climb to the second floor, but the stairs were shaking and he couldn't climb them. Soon the building collapsed and he found himself trapped between the transom and the cei-

ling, but unharmed. In panic and haste, he tried to break through with a candlestick that was at hand, but his sides were pinned and he could do nothing. Some of the men and women in the house were probably crushed to death. Others like himself were trapped under the roof and unable to get out, crying out in agony here and there, but gradually their voices grew weaker, and when the voices stopped after some time, it seemed each had died, making him feel even more forlorn. He thought somehow to escape but could do nothing about it. Meanwhile, fire spread and the area where the shoji screens had fallen became bright, allowing him to see where there were gaps, and he crawled out to escape. When he returned home, his father's house in Shitaya Sakamoto (a townhouse that locals called the Morikawa estate) had also collapsed, and Kiitsu's granddaughter (wife of Yamamoto Sodō) who had been staying there was also crushed to death.
