[Right page] Many people have seen it. It is said that it has been appearing since the night of the third. ○Ōkubo Hachirōzaemon,御使番 (messenger official) with a 1,000 koku stipend in Ogawa-chō Sarugaku-chō, went to Marunouchi on business on October 2nd, returned home at the hour of the dog that same night, and was drinking sake when this great earthquake caused his entire residence to collapse. The master died instantly and nine retainers died. A fire started from the Ikeda residence in the same area, and this house was also destroyed in the conflagration. The servants were greatly agitated and confused, and while they were pulling out and carrying away their master's corpse, sparks were already falling like rain, and the house was completely burned down without being able to remove a single household item. At this time, a scroll written in Ōkubo Hikozaemon's own hand was lost in the fire. This is truly lamentable. ○Fushiya Shichinosuke, a 役寄合 (duty rotation official) with 1,500 koku stipend in the same area, was holding a celebration that night, giving sake to his retainers, and had himself become drunk and was lying down when the sudden tremor caused the residence to collapse. The master and retainers [Left page] totaling eight people died instantly, and the residence was completely burned down. ○Satō Shigenojō, a 役寄合 with 3,300 koku stipend in the same area, went to visit the group leader on official business that day, returned home, and was entering his sitting room to remove his 上下 (formal dress) when the earthquake caused the residence to collapse. Three people including master and retainers died instantly, three in the front tenements, six in the women's quarters and samurai quarters died instantly, and a fire started from the servants' quarters, burning everything down. ○Hotta Bitchū-no-kami, who was at that time a 御老中 (senior councilor) serving regular duty until October 5th with 110,000 koku at Nishi-maru-shita, was residing in Ogawa-chō when the earthquake caused his residence to completely collapse, with the lord trapped under the collapsed house. Two of his palanquin bearers named Denzō and Heizaemon came running, removed the roof tiles, and finally rescued him. The lord suffered only minor injuries to his feet but went to the castle anyway. Particularly that night, there was a private notice of an official summons, so the inner and outer quarters were preparing items for the official summons, with many lamps and charcoal fires, so
