の子は私がよく養育するので必ず心配することはない。これから割下水にいる牧野氏を頼みに行くので、お経も読んでもらって成仏してください」と言い捨てて立ち去った。その夜子の刻下刻（午前1時頃）に牧野氏の方へ尋ねてくる者があり、髪は残らず焼け落ち、頭面から半身まで黒く煤け、焼けただれた様は幽霊のようであった。新助が詳しく問うと「火は段々燃え来て梁の半分まで焼けたので、押し付けられた所が軽くなり、ようやく火中を逃れた」と語った。

Understanding, Zengoro quickly crawled into the collapsed mansion, finally found and rescued the nun, had the ladies-in-waiting tend to her, and respectfully seated her in the entrance hall. He then extinguished fires in the tea room and two other places, and rescued eleven more people. Of these, five died immediately. At this time, an express messenger arrived from the main residence to celebrate their safety, and when it was told how they had been saved by Zengoro, on the 5th day he was summoned to the main residence and appointed as construction supervisor with an immediate reward of 100 ryō in gold and a perpetual stipend for fifteen people.
