崩れた中にその最も激しいものがわずかにここに開いている。本郷新町屋で九軒が潰れ、その中の三河屋彦兵衛、同じく長七等が住居の糀室の中へ落ち込んだ。同所のよこね坂で七軒が潰れ、同じく春木町二丁目で四軒、同三丁目で一軒、同五丁目で一軒、同六丁目で二軒、同丸山菊坂で四軒、その中で伊勢屋次郎兵衛の家で居住者が落ち込んだ。同元町で五軒、湯島天神門前で四軒、同植木町で一軒、同三組町で三軒、同六丁目で二軒《裏店》、同春日町で一軒、同樽町横町で二軒、神田明神社内で二軒。右の分について町々で詳しく調べ、それぞれ名前も分明であるが、良いことではない故にわざと略して記す。《また新町屋の三河屋彦兵衛という味噌屋の妻とよが、幼い男子に小さな用事をさせようとして糀室へ落ち入って死んだという話があるが、ここに略す》

孝心深いが、夫婦ともに邪見で我が子の愚かなることを知らない。ここで夫婦が密談していることをどうして聞いたのか、家主治兵衛が両人を呼び寄せて「このはる女は孝心深く、なおまた義理のある子である。その妹くらは実子であるから売っても差し支えない。前金を受け取ったということである。我が方から返事と断りを言いに遣わそう」と言うので、せん方なく腹立たしいままに金五両を姉はるに持たせて遣わした。この時地震で平吉の家は一番に潰れ、親子三人ともに崩れ家の下敷きになり、隣家の火災でみな焼死した。姉はるは家主の方にいて安全であった。これは常に継子を憎み、あまつさえ遊女に売ろうとした不実を諸天がお戒めになったところである。恐ろしいことである。慎むべきである。

Among the collapsed structures, the most severely damaged ones barely remain open here. In Hongo Shinmachi-ya, nine houses collapsed, among which Mikawaya Hikobei, and similarly Choshichi and others fell into the koji fermentation rooms of their residences. At the same location's Yokone slope, seven houses collapsed; similarly in Haruki-cho 2nd district, four houses; in the 3rd district, one house; in the 5th district, one house; in the 6th district, two houses; at Maruyama Kikusaka, four houses, among which residents of Iseya Jirobei's house fell in. △In Nezu Nanaken-cho, there was a ragman named Heikichi. His wife Katsu and daughter Haru, who was seventeen this year, was an adopted daughter. His younger sister Kura was sixteen and his biological child. This Haru had good character and was also beautiful,

and deeply filial, but both husband and wife were prejudiced and did not recognize their own child's foolishness. Somehow overhearing the couple's private consultation, the landlord Jihe summoned both and said, "This girl Haru is deeply filial and moreover a dutiful child. Her sister Kura is a biological child, so there would be no problem selling her. I understand advance money has been received. I shall send word with our response and refusal." Having no choice and being angry, they gave five ryō in gold to the elder sister Haru to take with her. At this time, due to the earthquake, Heikichi's house was the first to collapse, and all three family members were trapped under the collapsed house and died in the fire from neighboring houses. Elder sister Haru was at the landlord's place and was safe. This was divine retribution from all the heavenly beings for constantly hating the stepchild and moreover attempting to sell her as a prostitute. How fearsome! One must be cautious!
△Lord Matsudaira Izumo-no-kami of Ikenohata, due to the earthquake and fire, provided relief from Kaya-cho 2nd district to Nezu Nanaken-cho, giving three to (about 54 liters) of white rice and one ryō of gold per household.
