△牛込白銀町浅野勇次といふ人吉原大黒屋の喜瀬川になしみ通ひ
ける其夜は日頃信心せる善国【國】寺の毘沙門天へ詣て帰る途中壱人の旅
僧に逢ふ善国【國】寺は何方なると尋る故云々の所なりと教へける此僧示て
云足下今革命の相あり惣て陰に帰して最不祥也然れ共足下は神仏【佛】
を尊み給ふ故是を参らせん若止事を得す他行【たぎょう＝その場を離れて余所へいくこと】する共深更【深夜】に及はす
帰宅すへし泊る事は弥わろしといふに一礼【禮】を演【のべ】て帰宅しけるか其夜も
又喜瀬川かかたへ趣酒宴して亥刻にも成しかは不斗彼僧の云し事を
思ひ出し暇を告て立出馬道迄来る所右地震にて大に駭しか吉原
の方を見るに暫の間に所々に火災起り崩落物音すさましき故急に取て
返し大黒屋へ駈付右きせ川外五人を救出したり此夜泊りたらは非業

とて上りたるに暫有て梯子を下なから打つぶやくやう今宵定めて
地震有て強かるへしと独【獨】言しけるを番頭聞不祥の事とて叱りける
か果して其夜此禍に家倉を破損し家内辛ふして身を脱れ恙
なかりしかはかの丁稚か云たる事を思ひ出して主人へ告け訝（イフカ）しく
思ひて丁稚へ尋ねけるに私の父は信州の者にて常に語るには善光寺開
帳の時地震ありたる日の夕方に西方に白雲霞の如く棚引又東の方に
藷（ツクネイモ）の如き雲出たり其夜彼国【國】の大地震也又暫有て元の如き雲東西に
出たり是必揺返しならんと彼雲を見たるともからには家財を広【廣】原に運

△Asano Yuji of Ushigome Shirogane-cho was a regular patron of Kisegawa at the Daikokuya brothel in Yoshiwara. That night, after visiting Bishamonten at Zenkoku-ji temple where he regularly worshipped, on his way home he met a traveling monk. The monk asked which direction Zenkoku-ji was, so he told him it was in such-and-such a place. This monk then said, "You currently have the aspect of revolution. Everything returns to darkness and is most inauspicious. However, since you honor the gods and Buddha, I shall give you this. Even if you must unavoidably go elsewhere, you should return home before late night. Staying overnight would be very bad." He bowed in gratitude and returned home. That night he again went to Kisegawa's place, had a drinking party, and when it became the hour of the boar (around 10 PM), he suddenly remembered what the monk had said. He took his leave and set out, reaching Umamichi when the earthquake struck and greatly startled him. Looking toward Yoshiwara, he saw fires breaking out in various places within moments, and the sound of collapsing structures was terrible, so he hurriedly turned back, rushed to Daikokuya, and rescued Kisegawa and five others. Had he stayed that night, he would have met an unnatural

death, but mysteriously escaped with his life, which must have been entirely due to the virtue of his religious faith.
△An apprentice at a pawnshop in Komagome Hakusan-shita, on the evening of October 2nd, went upstairs to close the wooden shutters on the second floor. After a while, as he descended the ladder, he muttered, "Tonight there will surely be an earthquake and it will be strong." The head clerk heard this and scolded him for saying something inauspicious. But indeed that night, the disaster damaged the house and storehouse, and the household barely escaped with their lives unharmed. Remembering what the apprentice had said, they told the master, who found it strange and questioned the apprentice. He replied, "My father is from Shinshu province, and he always tells me that on the evening of the day when there was an earthquake during the Zenkoji temple exhibition, white clouds streaked like mist in the west, and yam-shaped clouds appeared in the east. That night was the great earthquake in that province. After a while, similar clouds appeared in the east and west.
