【注② 「うこき」は「うこぎ」では。古く中国から渡来して人家に栽培され時に野生化している。多くは生垣に用い若葉は食用、根の皮は滋養強壮剤として用いる。「雉子」は古くは多く「きぎし」➝「きぎす」と呼ばれていた。】

霜が這い入って、皆は萩の枝にからみついているようで、明るく照らされても、このように猪が伏せているような床で夜を過ごすも、眠ることもできない。時雨さえ漏れてきて、羽の抜けた鳥のように寒々とした夜風に一層ひどく、朝を待って泣いたのであった。

地震はなお日本の島々を揺り動かして安定させ、幾万代も動かないようにするのか
崩れた家は焼けて、辛うじて残ったものも盗まれてしまった
小屋にいても地震は起こるが、目をそらしていれば時雨が降って漏るのが侘しい
家だけでなく胸も潰れて、若草の三つ葉四つ葉の言葉も出ない
白波の過ぎた浜の夜警は、焼け野原で「火事だ、危険だ」の声

右筠居の喜多村氏の戯れ文である。友人石塚豊芥子の蔵の雑草を詠んだ。
武蔵野の五加木の雉子よ、地震が起こって鳴いているが、妻子の行方を知らないのか
