**[Right folio]** "Even though our forces are few, we cannot allow them to pass through this province without exchanging at least one arrow in resistance," the report declared. 〇Meanwhile, on the night of the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, the Gosho (Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu) proceeded to the lodgings of Furuyama Jūrō Mitsufuji's residence at Yanagihara, declaring that a council of war regarding the night's battle would be held, and summoned the various daimyō. Those who attended in response to the summons that night included: Hosokawa Musashi Nyūdō Tsunehisa, his younger brother Ukyō-no-daibu Yorimoto, and Awaji-no-kami (also of the Hosokawa), Hatakeyama Uemon-no-suke Motokuni and his son Danjō-no-shōhitsu, Imagawa Kazusa-no-suke Yasunori and Saemon-no-suke Nakaaki, Isshiki Gyōbu-no-daibu, Kadenokōji Jibu-no-tayū Yoshishige, Ōuchi-no-suke Yoshihiro, Akamatsu Kazusa-no-suke Yoshinori, and Sasaki Jibu-no-shōyū Takanobu — all rushed to attend one after another. 〇Meanwhile, to Tō-ji were dispatched Imagawa Kazusa-no-suke Yasunori, Echigo-no-kami, Sasaki Rokkaku Hangan, **[Left folio]** with a combined force of over eight hundred horsemen. Deploying at dawn on the twenty-sixth, they secured the gates on all four sides, erected arrow towers (yagura) at various points, and stood ready to engage the enemy advancing along the constructed road through Koga Nawate. The Gosho (Shogun) departed at the Hour of the Dragon (approximately 8 a.m.) on the twenty-sixth to the lodgings of Isshiki Gyōbu-no-daibu's residence at Nakamikado Horikawa. Since this was a sortie to suppress his own retainers (the Yamana), he did not don his armor, but instead wore an eboshi (court cap) with a long-silk naoshire (formal surcoat), and girded himself with a sword called "Shinozukuri." His mounted escort likewise all wore folded eboshi and plain suō-hakama. The remaining military forces all went forth fully armored, deploying unit by unit, and took up positions in the Uchino (the former site of the Imperial Palace). First, Hosokawa Musashi Nyūdō Tsunehisa, together with his younger brothers Ukyō-no-daibu and Awaji-no-kami, with a combined force of over two thousand horsemen, took up positions facing the Nakamikado Nishi-Ōmiya and Ukon-no-baba, descended from Mineno-dō, crossed Kami-Umezu, and advanced against — as was reported — the forces of Yamana Harima-no-kami.
