...among (the Tanba forces), Ogino Mimasaka-no-kami, Kuge, and Nagasawa rode to join the encampment at Uchino and presented themselves at the Kanrei's camp, surrendering.
〇 At the Hour of the Rabbit (approximately 5–7 a.m.) on the last day of the twelfth month, Yamana Kazusa-no-suke and Kobayashi Shuri-no-suke pressed their attack on Shijō-Ōmiya and engaged Ōuchi-no-suke Yoshihiro's forces in battle. Kazusa-no-suke said to Kobayashi: "This is a battle from which there is no escaping. There is nothing for it but for even a single horseman to press close to the Gosho encampment, and die with the Lord's chambers as one's pillow." Declaring that they should charge through up the Ōmiya road, break into the area near the Gosho, and die in battle there, Kobayashi had no sooner agreed than he came charging in. Yoshihiro then came rushing out diagonally toward the east and west of the Jingikan and the Reizei-Ōmiya intersection, cutting men down with his naginata, and few among men and horses alike survived. Thinking he could not afford to be unhorsed, Kobayashi Shuri-no-suke brought himself alongside Ōuchi-no-suke on the left (bow) side, leapt over the stirrups, and dismounted on foot, then came at Ōuchi-no-suke with a blade two shaku and eight sun in length, bloodied all the way to the guard, held in his right hand.
**[Left folio]**
Kobayashi came charging in to cut him down, but finding no opening whatsoever, he bent his knee low, raised his sword beneath the sleeve, and struck two successive cuts, severing Ōuchi-no-suke's left (bow) arm at the forearm. Ōuchi-no-suke, being a man of exceptional valor, re-gripped his naginata and drove it clattering into the inner face of Kobayashi's helmet, where it lodged. As Kobayashi tilted his head back slightly in an attempt to wrench the naginata free, Yoshihiro re-gripped the naginata and slashed horizontally across the edge of his ■-ate (armor skirt or similar piece), cutting clean through the Inaba-style haidate (thigh guards) and their scales together, shearing off one thigh. There was no way Kobayashi could remain standing; he toppled over with his head to the north, pressed his left hand against the wound, and for a time continued fighting back with his sword — but he was visibly weakening by degrees, and at last dropped his sword and lay still. At that moment, one of Ōuchi-no-suke's young retainers rushed over to run him through; but Kobayashi seized the man's kusazuri (armor skirt), pulled him close, and stabbed him in return, falling together side by side in death. Taking advantage of this confusion, Yamana...
