間男を亭主が見つけて家に入った時、男がどこに困るだろうと思い、ずっと外しておいて、亭主が障子の外にまでついているのも通なので、間男も見つかって驚くのは普通なりと、家からわざと咳払いなどして無駄をいっているのも通の世の中なのである。

間男も通にて、先では何とも言わねども、首代の金を砂糖金を借りてでもやらねば通でないと、金を借りれば貸し方の砂糖も大通で、このような金の利を取るのは不通なりと、砂糖の方から三両一分の割にして、貸したものへ利を払っていくのはけしからぬ通な事なり。

英語訳
When a husband discovers his wife's lover and enters the house, thinking about where the man might be troubled, he keeps staying outside, and even following the husband to the outside of the sliding door shows connoisseurship. Since the lover being discovered and surprised is ordinary, deliberately coughing from inside the house and making futile sounds is also the way of this world of connoisseurs.

When he borrows money, the lender of sugar is also a great connoisseur, and thinking that taking interest on such money is not connoisseurship, the sugar dealer pays interest to the borrower at a rate of three ryō and one bu—this is outrageous connoisseurship.
