現代語訳
義太夫を語り習いの唐人が、語って人に聞かせたが、しかし声も節も悪いゆえに、茶飯にもならず、それでも語って聞かせたくて堪えられぬゆえ、語り手の方から茶飯を炊いて人を呼んで語るのは通なものなり。また来て聞く友達も、そこは上手ではなく悪い浄瑠璃を堪えて聞いているのは切なくもあろうが、大通・通人の義太夫はあまり面白くもないものなり。

英語訳
A Chinese connoisseur who was learning to recite gidayu performed for people to listen, but since both his voice and musical phrases were poor, it didn't even merit a meal, yet being unable to resist his desire to perform for others, the performer himself would cook rice and tea and invite people to listen to his recitation—this is what connoisseurs do. The friends who come to listen, though they endure listening to the poor joruri performance that lacks skill, may find it painful, but the gidayu of great connoisseurs and refined people is not particularly entertaining.
