現代語訳
転んでばかりいては長くは流行らないだろう。
この下駄を履いて転んで笑われたゆえに、今の世にこれを「下駄下駄笑い」という。また「馬鹿げたものだ」というのもこれからのことである。

通人ここでは女は三枚裏、五枚裏の草履を履き、男は幅の広い日和下駄を履くということを唐で聞き伝え、張るほどのことを坊ほどに言う世の中なれば、裏付けは二十枚重ね、下駄は真板ほどにして履けば、なんと男女ともに転ぶことか知らず。いかに流行りものなればといって、親の馬鹿が娘に履かせてみたがる奴さ。しかし娘の転ぶのを親が喜ぶか。こんな親父が唐にもあろうか。
