現代語訳
その頃、日本に和藤内三官といえる勢いの通人がいたが、唐に戦があると聞き、何でも決着をつけて勢いの手並みを見せようと、熱心に懇願してやって来た。しかし唐は通人の世となり、戦のことはさておき、見物と通な世の中なれば、和藤内大いに調子を狂わされ、本国へ帰る。
千里ヶ竹の虎は和藤内をちらりと見かけたが、「俺が出たならば喧嘩になるであろう」と、虎も通人ぶって大人しく見ぬふりをしている。
【和藤内の台詞】
「この大立ち回りも無駄になった。大山へでも納めよう。」
本当にこったか。あの虎は虎の尾の十四郎で、「いやあ、手応えもない」と言って惜しがっているやつさ。
【虎の台詞】
「ここで俺が大暴れを一つやっては、竹を勝手にして尻を切られるというものだ。」
英語訳
At that time, there was a spirited connoisseur in Japan called Watōnai Sankan, who heard there was a war in China. Wanting to settle things and show off his prowess, he earnestly pleaded to come over. However, China had become a world of connoisseurs, and with war set aside, it was a world of sightseeing and sophistication, so Watōnai was greatly thrown off and returned to his home country.
The tiger of Senri-ga-take caught a glimpse of Watōnai, but thinking "If I were to appear, it would lead to a fight," the tiger also acted like a connoisseur and pretended not to see him, behaving docilely.
[Watōnai's dialogue]
"This grand performance has become useless. I might as well dedicate it to Daisen mountain."
Is this really what happened? That tiger is Toranoo no Jūshirō, the fellow who says "Ah, there's no challenge at all" and acts disappointed.
[Tiger's dialogue]
"If I were to cause a great disturbance here, it would be like cutting bamboo freely and getting my rear end cut off."
