元治元甲子七月十九日暁かわら町二条下る辺より出火同四つ時
堺町御門辺よりも出火孟火はげしくして所々へ飛火又同日に
伏見出火山崎辺出火嵯峨天龍寺へ飛火暫時の間に洛中
一面の火と成候様見ゆる市中の混雑筆紙つくしがたし老若男女
共火勢に恐れ逃げさまよひけが人等も有之由誠に希代の大火ゆへ
近在は勿論大坂などへも若哉飛火もあらんかと逃支度の
外他事なく安き心もなき程の大火也同廿一日七ッ半頃火鎮り申候

元治元年甲子七月十九日暁、瓦町二条下る辺りより出火、同四つ時には堺町御門辺りからも出火、猛火が激しくて各所へ飛び火しました。また同日に伏見で出火、山崎辺りで出火、嵯峨天龍寺へ飛び火し、わずかの間に洛中一面の火となった様子で、市中の混乱は筆舌に尽くしがたいものでした。老若男女ともに火勢を恐れて逃げ惑い、怪我人等もいた由で、まことに希代の大火のため、近在はもちろん大坂などへも、もしや飛び火もあるのではないかと逃げ支度をするばかりで他に何も手につかず、安心できない程の大火でした。同二十一日七つ半頃、火が鎮まりました。

【Main text】
On the dawn of July 19th, first year of Genji (1864), a fire broke out around the area below Kawaramachi Nijo. At the same 4 o'clock hour, another fire broke out around Sakai-machi Gate. The fierce flames were intense and spread to various locations. On the same day, fires also broke out in Fushimi and around Yamazaki, with flames reaching Tenryu-ji Temple in Saga. In a short time, it appeared that all of central Kyoto was aflame, and the chaos in the city was indescribable. Men and women, young and old alike, fled in terror from the fierce flames, and there were reportedly injured people as well. It was truly an unprecedented great fire, so much so that not only the nearby areas but even places like Osaka were preparing to evacuate, wondering if the flames might reach them too. People could think of nothing but escape preparations and had no peace of mind due to this great fire. The fire was extinguished around 7:30 on the 21st of the same month.
