たゞはおきぬやつゆへ
朝いなが内を出がけに
きん所のお寺のはん
しやうをぬすみゆく

たしかに朝いなどのゝ

現代語訳
手長島は転んでもただでは起きない奴なので、朝比奈の家を出がけに近所のお寺の鐘を盗んでいく。お寺では色々と評議し、「昔から背の高い者を鐘泥棒」と例えの通り、これは確かに朝比奈殿の所にこの頃来ている居候の背高島の仕業であろうと、かの寺の所化共が訴えに来たので、朝比奈は大いに迷惑する。
朝比奈曰く、
「この背高島はそんな悪い者ではございません。それはてっきり手長島の仕業でございましょう。どうも仕方がないから鐘は弁償してあげましょう。また背高島もこの程、そんな疑いを受けないように人間並みにしてあげます」
と、背高島に笊をかぶせて背を低くする。

「この笊を見ると、それ逃げ出すのは、逃げると尻に釜をぶつけるぞ」
「はいはい、和尚様のご誕生…」
「高尾の身請け金は背の高いほど積んだというが、俺の背の高さほど積むと大騒ぎだ」
英語訳
Tenaga-shima was the type who wouldn't get up for free even after falling, so as he was leaving Asahina's house, he stole a temple bell from a nearby temple. The temple held various discussions, and following the old saying that "tall people are bell thieves," they concluded that this must surely be the work of Seitaka-shima, the freeloader who had recently come to stay at Lord Asahina's place. When the temple's young monks came to make this complaint, Asahina was greatly troubled.
Asahina said:
"This Seitaka-shima is not such a bad person. That must surely be Tenaga-shima's doing. Since there's nothing to be done about it, I'll compensate for the bell. Also, I'll make Seitaka-shima look like a normal person so he won't receive such suspicions in the future."
And he put a bamboo basket over Seitaka-shima's head to make him shorter.
