現代語訳
小人島の人は日本が珍しくて、そこら辺りを見て歩いていたが、大風が吹いてきて、国の上に吹き上げ、裏の井戸の中へ吹き落とした。朝比奈は大事な代物をなくしては面白くないと慌てふためき、助けようと思ったが、急に手段のない折から、手長島が「ここぞわが技量を見せる場」とし、少しも騒がず、肩肌脱いで井戸へ手を差し伸べ、難なく簡単につまみ出した。この時皆々、手長島を感心しない者はいなかった。
