(Continuing from the previous section: the story of Ryōzō) During the war in China (the Sino-Japanese War), he went as a laborer and worked across various battlefields, until finally China surrendered, peace negotiations were concluded, and his service complete, Ryōzō returned home. The money he had saved from his labor as a hired hand was so plentiful it flowed like water, and intoxicated by the charms of a courtesan named Otai, he frequented her establishment for over two months. Every time he came up to the parlor, his drunken behavior was so bad it shamed those present—once drunk, he would become quarrelsome and belligerent, wicked to the core. For the good-natured Otai, this was her duty as a courtesan, and she tried her best to humor him and attend to him graciously, yet her heart could find no calm. (Yanre-he—a musical refrain) **The Great Tsunami Lament — Part Two (Lower)** Now here is a strange and remarkable tale. In the coastal area of Kunohe District, there is a small village called Miyato-mura. Here lived a fisherman named Jinosuke, who supported a family of four in humble circumstances. Yet he was known as an honest man who, together with his wife, devoted himself to caring for his elderly mother. His filial piety became known even to the authorities, and he received a commendation from the prefectural office, continuing thereafter to lead a righteous life. This year, his son had just turned nine years old. On that fateful day, Jinosuke had gone out fishing and was casting his line at sea.
