    和漢三才圖會五果類に曰  壬午年五月五日        栗の花は         薬梅雨請真寫          五月梅雨中落つ故俗所          隋栗花と爲梅の雨訓を      和名類聚抄に云         栗子(くり)      兼名苑に云         栗は刀質の友 一名撰子           和名 久利   増補多識編五果類に曰    栗(りつ)《割書:和 久|名 利|》〇茅栗(ばうりつ)    《割書:和 今按に志|名 波久利|》     《割書:増補|異名|》栭栗(ゆりつ)  栗(れつりつ)     板(はん)栗〇山栗(さんりつ)〇錐(すい)栗〇莘(しん)栗 山家集  山風に峰のさヽ栗はらはらと   庭に落しく大原の里              或書云              景行天皇四年 淡海(あふみ)國に有              一の枯木殖梢 穿(うか)つ空を入る雲に問由を              於國老に云く神代の栗の木なり此木の              枝並ふ山嶽に故に云 並枝(じえ)山と又並              連る高峰に故に云 並聯(ひら)山と              落成る土と土中悉く栗葉也云々              栗本郡の名亦起る此より乎              一種澤栗あり國俗の名つけ所木曽山中              澤邉に多し實葉常の栗と異なるてなし              本理は常の栗より義し器材とす其實              小にめ大木多し棒のるい也              栭栗《割書:さヽ|くり|》とは小なるを云小栗なり柴栗と              云爾雅註に江東呼ぶ小栗を爲栭栗と              崔禹錫か食今日経には枕子と云り              柴栗は大實栗の如く賣鬻て少くめ              多く〇かち栗とめ正月の節物に多り用ゆ              搗(かち)栗の製法實譜に詳

現代語訳

和漢三才図会五果類に曰く  壬午年五月五日        栗の花は         薬梅雨請真写          五月梅雨中に落つ故、俗に          栗花と梅雨を結び付けて呼ぶ      和名類聚抄に云う         栗子(くり)      兼名苑に云う         栗は刀質の友 一名選子           和名 久利   増補多識編五果類に曰く    栗(りつ)《和名 久利》○茅栗(ぼうりつ)    《和名 今按ずるに志波久利》     《増補異名》栭栗(ゆりつ)  栗(れつりつ)     板(はん)栗○山栗(さんりつ)○錐(すい)栗○莘(しん)栗 山家集  山風に峰のささ栗はらはらと   庭に落としく大原の里              或る書に云う              景行天皇四年 近江国に              一本の枯木あり、その梢は空を突き抜け雲に入る。その由来を              国老に問うと云く、神代の栗の木なり。この木の              枝が山岳に並ぶ故に 並枝(なみえ)山と云い、また並び              連なる高峰の故に 並連(ひら)山と云う。              落ちて成る土と土中はことごとく栗葉なりという              栗本郡の名もこれより起こるのか              一種沢栗あり、国俗の名付けるところ、木曽山中の              沢辺に多し。実・葉は常の栗と異なることなし。              木理は常の栗より良く、器材とする。その実は              小さいが大木が多い。茅栗の類である。              栭栗《ささくり》とは小さいものを云う。小栗なり。柴栗と              云う。爾雅注に「江東では小栗を栭栗と呼ぶ」と。              崔禹錫の食経には枕子と云う。              柴栗は大実栗のように売買されることは少ないが、              多く干し栗として正月の節句の品に多く用いられる。              搗(かち)栗の製法は実譜に詳しい。

When asked about its origin,              the provincial elder said it was a chestnut tree from the age of gods. Because this tree's              branches aligned with the mountains, it was called Namie Mountain, and because of the              connected high peaks, it was called Hira Mountain.              The soil formed from fallen leaves was entirely chestnut leaves.              The name of Kurimoto County also originates from this.              There is one type called valley chestnut, a local name, abundant in              the wetlands of the Kiso mountains. Its fruit and leaves do not differ from ordinary chestnuts.              The wood grain is finer than ordinary chestnuts, making it good for crafting utensils. The fruit is              small but there are many large trees. It is a type of thatch chestnut.              Bamboo grass chestnuts (sasa-kuri) refers to small ones - small chestnuts. Also called brushwood chestnuts.              The Erya commentary states "In Jiangdong, small chestnuts are called bamboo grass chestnuts."              In Cui Yuxi's Dietary Classic, they are called pillow seeds.              Brushwood chestnuts are less commonly sold like large chestnuts, but              are often used as dried chestnuts for New Year celebrations.
