お袖は怪我がないないと言い立てられたが、さして煩いもせず、また紅葉屋本の吸い物をも食うはずもなく、何ともなく髪の薄くなったので恥ずかしく思い、西の窪より毎日毎日愛宕へ日参をして髪の生えるように祈った。
「女盛りが大事ではいけない」
髪の見苦しいので頭巾を拵えたが、至極理にかなってよく、不精な女中は外へ行くにも髪を結わず、櫛笄の用心よく、これより世間に颯と流行り、お袖が初めて

Osode was told that there was nothing wrong with her, but she wasn't particularly troubled, nor did she eat the soup from Momijiya-hon. For some reason her hair had thinned, and feeling ashamed of this, she made daily pilgrimages from Nishinokubo to Atago Shrine, praying for her hair to grow back.
"A woman's prime years are too precious to waste."
Because her hair looked unsightly, she made a hood, which was quite reasonable and practical. Lazy maidservants would go out without arranging their hair, being careful with their combs and hairpins. From this, it became fashionable in society, and since Osode was the first to
