である。まず、この世界の底は一面火であり、その上に様々な岩があり、またその上に土地を載せ、草木がここに生え、人や家畜がここに住んでいる。さて、この土地からしみ込んだ水は岩の隙間から漏れて火の中へ流れ入り、火のために蒸されて湯気となり、その湯気が積もり溜まって出ようとするが出口がなく、その勢いで震動を起こし、大地を震わせる。これがすなわち地震である。その湯気の強さは蒸気車や蒸気船で知ることができる。

蒸気車も蒸気船も皆わずかな水を蒸し、その湯気の吹き出る力で走るのであるが、実に人目を驚かすほどである。これを推して考えれば、地下に漏れ入った数多くの水が蒸されて湯気となれば、この世界を吹き破ることは極めて簡単な理屈である。しかし、前に言ったように、天が火山を所々に造って、その気を漏らすため、その災いも稀である。○さて地震にも様々な種類があって、ある時は左右に動くものがあり、上下に動く

First, the bottom of this world is entirely fire, above which there are various kinds of rock, and above that lies the earth where vegetation grows and humans and livestock dwell. Now, water that seeps through this earth leaks through gaps in the rocks and flows into the fire, where it is steamed by the fire and becomes vapor. This vapor accumulates and seeks to escape, but having no outlet, it creates tremors with its force and shakes the great earth. This is what we call an earthquake. The power of this vapor can be understood through steam cars and steam ships.

Both steam cars and steam ships operate by steaming just a small amount of water and running on the force of the vapor that blows out, yet they are truly astonishing to behold. When we consider this principle, it becomes clear that when the great quantity of water that has leaked underground is steamed into vapor, it would be extremely easy for it to blow apart this world.
