...floating on the water's surface, while on one side it produces young roots (tender rhizomes, donyō). At the tip of these young roots, two buds (ryōga) are again produced. One of these becomes a standing leaf (tachiba/kika), and the other becomes a root (gyō). In this manner, when two or three leaves emerge from the water, small roots (shōgyō) are produced from the nodes, and floating leaves (ukiha/gyōka) and standing leaves (tachiba/kika) appear. Furthermore, three buds (sanga) are produced at the tip of the root (gyōmatsu). One of these becomes a standing leaf, one becomes a flower bud (kantan), and one becomes a root. Afterward, small roots are produced from the nodes just as before, and this is repeated at every node. Whisker-like roots (higenē/shujaku) are produced at these nodes. The root is thin and creeps horizontally through the shallow mud. When autumn arrives and the flowers and leaves are spent, the root thickens and enters deep into the mud. This is the part used for food. The leaves follow the direction of the sun (south). In the root, inside the stem, and in the leaf veins, there are all holes (pores) and fibers. The flower has sixteen or seventeen petals, pale red in color, with vertical striations. Following the sun, the flower opens in the morning, closes by evening, opens again the next morning, and falls after two days. The stamens of the lotus are yellow,

and exceedingly clean and fragrant. The fragrance is emitted in the morning and subsides by noon. The lotus seedpod is at first yellow, then turns green, and becomes black when ripe. Its shape resembles a honeycomb. The lotus seeds (renjitsu) are extremely hard; when they ripen in autumn, they naturally fly out. Beside the top of each seed's hull there is always one small dot. When the seed germinates (shisei), it first produces two leaves without a sheath. The bitter embryo (kuiyoku, the plumule within the lotus seed) is found attached upside down inside the seed, near the top. A sheath forms, then two more leaves appear, and from the center, a young rhizome (wakame/donyō) grows and spreads horizontally. This is the origin of the lotus root.
In general, there are many varieties of lotus, all of which are variations (henshū). If a variant variety is planted together with the pale red type, the variant will inevitably wither and die. The book *Hiden Kakyō* (Secret Tradition Flower Mirror) says: It is also said that if one plants a day before the Spring Equinox, the flower will be above the leaves; if one plants a day after the Spring Equinox, the leaves will be above the flower; and if one plants on the day of the Spring Equinox itself, the flower and leaves will be level with each other. That said, plants that grow naturally have their flowers rising above the leaves. The book *Kakubutsu Sōwa* (Collected Discourse on the Investigation of Things) says: As for lotus flowers...
