【右丁】
暇な時には、心の赴くままにしたがい、見聞を楽しみ、精神を養うことは、何ら道に反するものではない。王羲之（真卿）の書や、王維（摩詰）の絵画も、まさにそのようなものであろう。

尾張藩の清原重巨は、草木をこよなく愛し、深くこれを研究し、その識別において明晰であり、本書を著した。その意図するところも、まさにここにあるのではないだろうか。土地の適性を見極め、物産を丁寧に審察し、細部に至るまで漏れなく記しており、専門の名家といえども、これに勝るものはないほどである。

【左丁】
単に自らの志を楽しむのみならず、人々にとっても大いなる益をもたらすものである。しかしながら、世俗を超えた高い行いをする者は、必ず世間からの重荷を背負うものである。ある人はあるいは、本分を越えた越権行為であると謗るかもしれない。それゆえ、この言葉をもって弁明し、序文とする。

In one's leisure hours, to follow where the heart leads, to delight the senses, and to nourish the spirit — this is in no way contrary to the Way. The calligraphy of Yan Zhenqing (*Shinkei*) and the paintings of Wang Wei (*Makitsu*) are surely instances of precisely this.

Kiyohara Shigemi (*Jūkyo*) of Owari domain has a profound love for plants and trees; his ability to distinguish and identify them is clear and penetrating, and he has composed this work. It may well be that his intentions lie in just this spirit. He has assessed the suitability of the soil, carefully examined local products, and recorded everything in minute detail without omission, such that even specialists and renowned authorities could not surpass him.

Not only does he find joy in pursuing his own aspirations, but his work also brings great benefit to others. However, one who conducts themselves at a level surpassing the common world must invariably bear the burden of censure from ordinary society. Some may criticize this as overstepping one's proper bounds. For this reason, I offer these words in explanation, and present them as a preface.
