鄭子産曰人心之不同如其面焉是故に
人の平生嗜む所も亦同しからす琴詩
酒点茶囲碁各其性の嗜む所に随て
人情を楽ましむ予性の嗜む所もとより
草木にあり夫草木は無情なりといへとも
更る〳〵栄衰して四時尽ることなし

鄭の子産が言った。「人の心の違いは、その顔の違いと同じようなものだ」と。それゆえに、人が日常生活において好むものも、また同じではない。琴・詩・酒・茶の湯・囲碁、それぞれが自らの性質の好むところに従って、人の心を楽しませるものである。私が生まれながらに好むところは、もとより草木にある。そもそも草木は無情のものとはいえども、次々と栄えたり衰えたりして、四季を通じて尽きることがない。

Zheng Zichan said: "The differences in people's hearts are like the differences in their faces." And so it is that what people are drawn to in their daily lives is also not the same for each person. The zither, poetry, wine, the tea ceremony, the game of Go — each according to what one's own nature inclines toward, these things bring delight to the human heart. What my own nature has always been inclined toward is, of course, plants and trees. Although plants and trees are without sentiment, they flourish and decline in turn, endlessly, through all four seasons.
